cluck and henry
I know this will sound a bit thick but this will be the first winter for us keeping chickens. As the weather gets colder do we need to give slightly warm water for the ladies to drink. I am aware of the being careful of water freezing. But do they prefer warm water in winter like I might enjoy a warm drink rather than a cold one on a cold day?? Thanks
Egluntyne
Not worth bothering....it won't stay warm for very long. Just make sure that you crack the layer of ice off a couple of times a day! I shouldn't think they got their water warmed in the wild and they've survived to tell the tale.
Laura & CTB
My girls get cold water (but they do get nice warm porridge before bedtime)
robskyd
Put a ping pong ball (or something similar) in the glug, this should stop it from freezing.
Christian
I used a tennis ball last year, but it turned the water yellow. So i stopped using that! Two ping pong balls worked well, unless it was really cold -5 or so, then the whole lot froze. I now tip a jug of hot water in the glug in the mornings, if its frozen. chocchick
You can put glycerine or citricidal (e.g. omlet shop) in the water. Bringing in a night helps, although sometimes it is still frozen.
cluck and henry
Thanks for all the tips. The problem with being new to all this, is worries get bigger when you don't have the confidence of knowledge. Really appreciated the advice. layla
Yes there's no point warming their water it will just freeze quicker. Layla
Dancing Gal
On this topic - is it okay to give the girls the water from the water butt? It seems clean enough.
Daywalker
I'm not too sure but it probably depends how long it's been standing.
