lozkate
Hi All, Reporting in with sucess. Sam (sussex lite) was acting strange this morning. Charging in and out of the run and sounding like she was making major structural changes to the coop. She'd jumped on the veg patch fence (4'6") to meet me at eye level and needed gentle persuasion to return to the chook's bit of the garden. Close inspection of the nest box revealed that she'd cleared a patch of bare wood and clearly been sitting in it. I returned to it about 10 minutes ago and no egg in there but there was a nice surprise just outside the run on the grass - our first egg! It's 5.5cm long and weighs 50g. Its a tad on the small size for me but I'll let her off - no doubt she'll get the hang of big ones. I've noticed that they don't come out with those little red stamps on them. Y'know - the ones with the use by date on. Is there something I need to feed her on or can you get an chook attachment that does it? I'll get some photos of the clever chook and egg and post them up here soon. Meantime - thanks to all who've got us this far. Loz n Kate
xScrunchee
My girls just use a pencil to write the date they were laid. I did think about getting them a little stamper set but thought that they might be better off just sticking with the pencil
Carol U
Congratulations on your first egg. First ones are always small, but they'll gradually get bigger. I'm sure it will taste delicious! Like the previous writer, ours use a pencil to mark the order of lay - they do it very neatly. Enjoy!

chickencam
Well done that chook We also have a Light Sussex and she took a long time to lay but her first egg was 58g and all eggs since ( one every 2-3 days ) have been over 60g with largest weighing in at 66g. She has been very consistent with her eggs we have had no softies or double yolkers like we have had with our hybrids from time to time especially when they started. Her eggs are quite a pointed shape on one end and a lovely lilacy beige.
