Luvachicken
Just thinking about puppies and wondering what people think about whether to have a boy or a girl. Our Daisy, was obviously a girl - she has been the only dog in our lives. She was a cocker spaniel. She was very well behaved but I only have her to go by. Another thing I'm not so sure of is what to have, DS and I were thinking cavapoo, maltipoo, cockapoo, cavachon or even a yorkiepoo. Do any of you have any of these and which would get on better with chickens ? We may not even get one at all.......
Cat tails
Never had dogs, but I think it is very much down to the individual dog. But puppies are great anyway!
HarrisonFamily
I grew up with a female dog and she was amazing, gentle and well behaved we rescued a male dog and he is the same - I don't think it matters but I would never have trusted either dog with chickens. Both my dogs were rescue and Heinz 57 so I cannot recommend a breed but I can say find a good puppy class \ dog class first - training of dog and owner and socialising is so important.
Blackrocksrock
Either male or female are equally lovely and rather than something poo why not try a shelter for the same thing a mixed breed which is basically what these fancy bred ones are too. There are so many of them looking for homes - both puppies and older doggies. I always had labradors and the last one we had was a 10 year old rescue ex breeding *****. She was so lovely with the cat and thought her name was "Leave it" when out near the chickens LOL!. Good luck with whatever you decide and would love to see some photos!
Luvachicken
Thank you all very much 😊 I think we have decided as a family not to get one of any kind. I was excited by the fact of seeing cute, little puppies for sale and got carried away. I think if I lived on my own, I would definitely do it, but family stuff over rules other things. I will stick to getting pretty, little fluff balls instead..... for now.....
Cat tails
You can always dress up a puppy as a chicken… 😂
jaselamas
Or to dress a chicken as a puppy If you can't decide which sex is best for you, take them both. I have 2 Samoyed puppies - boy Jackie and girl Lisa. I didn't notice much difference in their behavior. They both are clever enough and obedient. For now, I spend most of my time training them, bookmarking every single dog-raising site, such as https://cleverpuppies.com. I have a fear of missing something, so my doggies could be aggressive or (which is worse) depressed. Also, I already wonder how smart should be their babies. Beantree
We were told the problem with females is their wee kills the grass and you end up with a lawn covered in burned brown patches, so it came as a surprise to us when our little girl's didn't. She is a rescue, possibly a dachshund/ terrier cross, but she has been neutered and perhaps that's why? She's smart, has crazy moments, is a dedicated hunter spending hours out in the fields to find voles to exchange for treats and makes a great guard dog, challenging anyone who comes anywhere near until one of us talks to them. Big problem is she hates other dogs, so taking her out anywhere is a handful and she can't be left alone, which could be down to the trauma of being abandoned, left tied to a post box and then put in a concrete floored cage to wait for a new home. I think with any dog there will be an element of luck.
Cat tails
Female wee is not majorly different from male wee, but they tend to do it in one spot. So they concentrate it more, whereas males wee a little all over the place.

After today's soaking, I am quite glad I don't have a dog that wants to go for a walk.

I feel the same in this weather - snow then rain coming straight down - would love another dog but walking in this is not my idea of fun! Luvachicken
Errrrmmm, there has been a slight change of plan...... A dear little cocker spaniel called Bonnie has moved in with us. She is 10 weeks old and makes a lovely little friend. Took a lot of persuading but we got there in the end.
Daphne
What a sweet little girl! She is a lovely colour. My bro has a young dog called Bonnie, but she is a collie. Enjoy the tranquillity whilst you can!

Unfortunately, last night was a pooping disaster in the crate, and she needed a shower before I could have mine this morning. Not really the best timing in terms of going to work but needs must.

Luvachicken
Last night was the best sleep we've had since she arrived last Wednesday. Going to try waking her up at 1am and 4am to see if that will help her not to mess her bed. We worked out that it was 25 years ago that we last had a puppy so I think we have forgotten things slightly. She sometimes forgets that we need to wee outside - I know it's early days. Any puppy tips for basically a newbie?
Cat tails
Maybe see if you can feed her at a different time? Clearly her insides can’t wait till morning. No experience with puppies either… cats are soooo much easier!

Clearly her insides can’t wait till morning. She gets 4 little meals a day but sadly, our trip to the vets for her jabs today, showed she could have a problem - with WORMS. I noticed that she has a fat little tummy, she's also been doing poops almost every half an hour. The vet also noticed her fat little tummy. He asked if we've given her milk and other general questions. Unfortunately, he said that a heavy worm burden can make them bloated. She also has an ear infection in each ear so they wouldn't give her her jabs today as they said she wasn't well enough. Poor little thing, no wonder she has no control over her toileting. She has been given some drops that go on her neck that apparently kills the worms. I hope it does, she must feel pretty uncomfortable. He said we should see poop that looks a bit like spaghetti🤢
Cat tails
Oh poor Bonny! Flo gets those drops too about every month and they work well. There is even an combination one that treats fleas too in one go. Did her breeder say when she last was wormed?
Blackrocksrock
Poor little toot - so many breeders don't worm their puppies which is so bad as all puppies and kittens have them unless mum has been wormed daily for a long number of days while pregnant. For all it would cost it's ridiculous. I hope that helps with all her toilet issues and she will soon sort with her ears too. Give her a big hug.

They will hopefully take 24 - 48 hours to work (not looking forward to pooped spaghetti) The breeder only gave her some Drontal puppy wormer which only treats one type of worm, according to the vet, so not really much use. She said she'd let me know when she did it but hasn't got back to me 🙄 She checked for fleas using a comb a bit like a nit comb 😮 Bonnie does at least have a microchip which is correct and works. Can't wait for her poop to be normal (it sounds like a piping bag with bubbly icing popping out of it 🤢)
Luvachicken
I think Bonnie's tummy is less swollen but we still haven't seen anything worm like in her poo. I'm hoping the stuff on her neck has worked - we've even looked at her poop with a magnifying glass but still can't find anything. Today, she has been as good as gold, but still forgets we need to wee outside instead of inside on the newspaper. She does have newspaper outside too but just doesn't remember. We bought her a set of bells to help with toilet training but so far she has just pounced on them 🙄
