The Dogmother
Sorry... It's Kate's fault, she gives me these leading lines and I just can't help myself. No sunshine here - just cloudy and chilly. BOYS! Weather's not too bad here - warmer than it has been but clouding over - keep the chill down there please. I'm a summer bird and like the heat. Guest
I hope things have improved now Gina, especially after all that coffee and cake! I have just taught recorders to a group of 6 year olds - I have the bottom set After a term of lessons, some of them still have no idea, not even a single note. I told their class teachers afterwards that the children had an attention span less than that of a goldfish and not to expect great things from them! Grrrr! Perhaps I'll be in a better mood next week and will handle them more effectively.
Mrs Frugal
Oh dear Ginette. Having worked in a reception department in school, I understand the goldfish memory span and you have my deepest sympathies. You can take out the ear plugs now ! I can hear the ringing from here Ginette, I presume when you say they can't play a single note, you don't mean that they are silent. Can I have some cake if there is any left? Guest
No sadly, not at all silent. I had to tell one girl at least 10 times in the first 5 minutes. (tempted to ask: Are you thick or what?) Last term (1st lessons) I had a mixed group of about 20. We have now sorted them into 'cans' and can'ts' and, as I had the good ones last year, I offered to have the 'can'ts'. Stupid me, really! About half of them are 'could-if-I-could-spend-a-bit-of-time-with-them' sorts and the other half are complete no-hopers. They couldn't possibly practise at home because they have absolutely no idea what to do. They'd have just as much idea if I asked them to write their names in ancient Greek! Hey-ho, don't have to try again till next week
chocchick
I'm not entirely sure who decided recorders, specifically the high-pitched descant ones were suitable for small children to start music on. The piercing notes can travel through any substance known to man. I've actually heard them played as a real musical instrument, I didn't realise it was one for years. Thought was just a teaching aid for kids. Take it you all scoffed the cake before it got to me.
Guest
Recorders are good because they're relatively easy to play and the size is suitable for little hands. They were not really designed for mass playing.
Mel (& Paul)
Gina I am worried about you. Did anyone rescue in the end or did they get too involved in talk of cake Hope your day is better today
Popcorn
HI Mel, I'm ok. I've been hiding under my desk for 24 hours and feel much better I'm currently sipping a hot cup of tea and eating a choccy bar, before my next on-slaught of 'can't do it' students. So nice to know I had so many rescuers though. If I can return the favour in anyway - just ask
