Ziggy
Okie, I have tried to stay away from the blood bath so far, but now I need to echo something someone else said before... I understand that some of you might like the idea of your own 'bhwt' section, especially those amongst you who are so 'passionate' about it... but chooks are chooks, and I have chooks that came from omlet, but have read the chickens links about ex-batts with interest, as I read the others... a separate section would kind of segragate chook owners, who, on the whole, have more in common than not... Martin B
I think this has been labelled a bhwt section. This is not what I mean personally although I may have labelled it as that. When talking about Battery Hens I always link to BHWT which may not be such a good idea. Jane Howarth is the founder of that particular trust and some of the forum members personal principles do not match with that of BHWT. For instance if a Battery Hen Farmer reads this unique thread and sees the constant 'criticism' that will not be good for relations on the BHWT side. I think it is important that we think carefully before posting about BHWT and perhaps this has not been aheared to in this thread. But it is not anybodys fault. My original thoughts would be that it would be a Battery Hen Support (if you like) section. Obviously BHWT are the main BH charity and their name gets chucked into the equation. Regards the chickens are chickens no matter whether Hybrids, Pure breeds or ex-batts etc. I personally do not think that is true. General chicken care is almost similar but those first few weeks after getting your pure breed or POL hens are not like those first few weeks of getting BHs. For example who knits a jumper for a pure breed hen? Martin
Prongs
I agree that it should be what people overall on the forum choose, seeing as it's them that have to post in it.

For example who knits a jumper for a pure breed hen? Martin I agree with that, it's kind of like comparing an old banger to a Ferarri, they both need different maintenance and I think it helps to have 1 point of reference for your old bangers, so to speak I feel awful calling them old bangers but couldn't think of a better metaphor, much as I adore my girls! and, it's those first few weeks when adopters need the most support, I know I did!!!! And, yes, I got it so thank you for that but it would have been helpful to have a point of reference, i.e. a battery hen forum.

Mrs Frugal
It is an opinion or idea, it doesn't mean I expect it to happen or think the forum sections or moderators are good or bad. I didn't even suggest the vote, or know that there were politics about the number of sections.I'm upset I don't feel comfortable to express what I think if it is not the "popular" or "official" opinion. Sarah, please don't feel upset over any of this . If suggestions weren't made, the forum wouldn't evolve. When I joined there were just 3 sections - Chickens, Eglus and the Survey Forum. The Nesting Box evolved because Lesley and I couldn't stop going off topic in the other sections . There are no politics about the number of sections. The only reason I've mentioned the number is because some people have told me that they don't read things now there are more sections as there is too much to keep up with. There is no official opinion because the way the forum evolves is down to suggestions from forum members. The decision will be the "popular" one as it's being decided by a poll which I think is the fairest way to go. I'd said that we'd discussed having a battery hens section amongst the moderators a few months ago and the decision at that time was that it may end up as a section which didn't get much use and we'd leave things as they were at that time. After reading the comments at the beginning of this topic, the best way forward was to have a poll to see what the forum members rather than the moderators thought about the idea. Why don't we just let the poll decide the outcome. Members are only allowed one vote per poll so it will be a fair decision. If the vote goes against a battery hen section now, maybe it's something we can raise again later on when opinions might have changed. I'm trying to be fair here but it's difficult when things get heated.

CatsCube
Why the special treatment of a complete section? Because I thought it was one of the most important issues to people on the forum as there are always raffles, and competitions for the BHWT, and debates about food sources. Because it would give it more weight and put it on an equal footing with gardening, crafts etc. Beacause it is good cause, and would save hens if someone new saw it and helped the BHWT, rather than just being a hobby. Because Omlet has links with the BHWT. Because I miss a lot of information as it is surrounded by other threads. Because people are busy and often want the information straight away without searching. Because following a long thread is difficult as if you join part way in you have to read the whole thing to catch up. New people join and start reasking the same questions, or don't know which page the info they need is on. I rarely read Lesley's thread just because it was hard to follow rather than because I wasn't interested. In longer threads it tends to change direction and it's redundant going back 2 pages when the thread has moved on. Doesnt the BHWT have its own site for information on raffles and competitions etc? The Omlet forums has information and links for this anyway, everyone here already knows about Battery Hens, and at the end of the day this is a hobby site, about keeping pets and crafts etc, its not a charity/awareness site. And the other points you mentioned like not being able to catch up on a thread, missing information amoungst other threads, wanting information without searching, people asking the same questions etc, that aplies to everything here! If someone is having problems introducing new chickens, illnesses, questions about particular breeds, and with all these topics there are stickys making it easier for people who have particular questions about things like the colour of poo, or avian flu information etc, so why not the same for BHWT? You will see if its been updated recently with any new information, in the same way other people do on every other topic. Or if you have an imediate question you want answering just start a new thread like everyone else does.
Egluntyne
Good points again CatsCube. There are plenty of fora out there specifically relating to battery hens for those who want that type of thing.
Guest
Good points again CatsCube. There are plenty of fora out there specifically relating to battery hens for those who want that type of thing. I would rather have it here, I don't want to go anywhere else and the same could be said of any of the other forums here, except of course the ones for discussion of Eglus and cubes specifically. I think I'm flogging a dead horse though so I don't have anything further to add. take care and good night all xxxx
