ajm200
We recently raised 8 chicks and were unlucky that 6 of the 8 were boys. 5 were returned to the breeder when they started crowing. The remaining one is now 4 months old and is an anxious boy. He still hasn’t made a sound. He’s definitely a boy. He has a huge red comb and wattles, long thick legs and a very upright stance. If he crows he goes as we can’t keep a crowing boy I’m assuming that he was bullied by the other 5 and learned to be quiet for self preservation. Should I be concerned that he’s silent? Beantree
We had a Wyandotte who's crow was silent; he opened his beak but no sound came out? As time went on it didn't change much; just a very short high pitched squeak. Certainly don't be concerned about it. I'm sure silent cockerels would be much sought after by some chicken keepers. mullethunter
You could probably sell him for a small fortune!!
Daphne
Don't worry, when he is ready he will find his voice; my guess will be in the Spring when the hormones start flowing. If he turns out to be that rarity of a silent cockeral, you will indeed be fortunate!
