Harry Potter

Yes ANH I have seen the film- I saw it at the cinema when it came out & I have it on DVD.

As far as films of books go it's quite good, a few bits were changed here & there but on the whole it was well done. I was curious to hear how the tune "Sheep may safely graze" sounded......

The book always makes me weep at the end.

What did you think of the film?

Gormenghast was the first book that made me go 'WOW! at the writing (I was 15) and probably set me on my way to studying English Lit.

the gormenghast trilogy, especially the first book 'Titus Groan' is just in a league of its own (imho). It was made into a TV programme some time ago but I only ever saw it the once; I haven't seen it repeated.

Mervyn Peake's writing most definately makes you go 'wow'; the description of the kitchen is just the business and his characters are so amazingly written that they are vivid in your imagination.

Other books that I read over and over again are Lord of the Rings, The Third Policeman and Iain Banks' The Wasp Factory

I too went wow when I read the gormenghast trilogy. It was repeated on the telly quite recently, but I didn't watch it a second time, as I was slightly disappointed with the telly version. Mervyn Peake also wrote a book called Mr. Pye which is worth a look. Another book that made me go wow was The Magus by John Fowles, I remember finishing it at around 2.30a.m and having to phone round my friends to see if they had read it because I so wanted to discuss it :roll::oops:

I think the LOTR trilogy is so very different to Harry Potter that its almost impossible to compare them.

LOTR is very adult in its writing & storyline, whereas HP is obviously aimed at a younger market & reader.

I have loved both sets of books for very different reasons, but don't think they should be compared as they are ained at different levels of maturity in readers :?:D

Our Second year high school English Literature syllabus comprised of Tolkien trilogy,so i guess made for 'easier' reading later on when i had the time to read! A masterpiece in my opinion although agreed a more 'heavy' reading material.

The Hobbit I feel will have more appeal to all levels when it's finally filmed :D

Maybe it is my childlike brain, but I couldn't get into The Lord of The Rings books> I really tried. The Hobbit was wonderful, so I bought LOTR books but have never finished them.

Harry Potter on the other hand.........wonderful, easy reading and escapism!

Funnily,I really couldn't read 'The Hobbit', but I loved the LOTR books & of course I adore the Harry Potter books too :?

I really, really tried with The Hobbit, but just couldn't get into it - odd, isn't it? :?

Has anyone else read the 'His dark materials' books or the Artemis Fowl ones - all brilliant IMHO :D

Not yet, but we are going to go sometime before the girls go back to school on the 9th.

I adore Daniel Craig,so even if the film is pants, there will be something nice to look at for me

I loved the His Dark Materials books & have just re read them. I think they are amazing, & must have read them about 4 times now.

Truly thought provoking, inspirational, imaginitive stuff - love them :P

Cinnamon you are bang on they are totally different animals. I dont know how many people know this but the LOTR books were written as a mileu into which Tolkien could drop his already invented langugage- Elvish.

LOTR is written very much in the saga tradition with scanty characterisation and everyone very concerned with their lineage. It's big battles, catastrophic events, a doomed race, and fate being played out.

HP was written for young adults and while it nods to Arthurian myth (and Malory Towers!) it is much more of a novel than a saga.

He is rather nice but he's not in the film a lot :( . I'll be interested to hear what you think of it. We all thought it was really good (the daemons are brilliant and the bears too!)
