MrsDaisy
our darling girl Flo passed away in the night, very very sad day in the daisy household. her companion Ermintrude is calling and searching for her, is it best to get another asap to help E with the change? Flo was an original eglu lady, Ermine is about 15 months younger. TIA Mrs Daisy

nicki9
I'm so sorry to hear your sad news. My instinct would be to get a new chicken as soon as possible, they really don't seem to like being on their own. However I'm sure someone more experienced will know exactly what to do. Karen & co.
I'm so sorry to hear about Flo I think you would be doing the right thing in getting another chook, to keep Ermin company, unless it would be difficult with space, it may be easier for you to introduce 2 new ones karen x
MrsDaisy
we didn't know if it would be better to introduce one now and then another in the future, we don't want Ermie to get stressed but then again she's a very unhappy girl atm. our banties are in a separate run and enclosure so plently of room with E. Karen & co.
I think it may be easier to introduce 2 at the same time, as introducing a single hen to 2 can be a little difficult I'm sure that someone will be along soon to give you more information Do you have a breeder near to you? karen x
MrsDaisy
I'm not sure, we're in Suffolk but can get to N Essex,Cambridgeshire etc easily. we got our banties from a lovely lady near Bury St Edmunds, but don't think she does big girls. so introducing 2 new to one existing is easier? Ermie is calling out for Flo our original girls were adopted as they came with the eglu.
Snowy
So sorry to hear about Flo Ermie would certainly appreciate a new companion, although she will probably attack her at first (silly hens) If you introduce 2 new ones, it can be harder for the old hen to pick on them both at once and takes the pressure of the newbie. MrsDaisy
seems sensible to get 2 then (we originally wanted 3 because of, well, this situation being left with one) but because we got 2 with the eglu we didn't want to rock the bokbok boat. does anyone have any recommendations for chicken breeders around here? Egluntyne
Sorry to hear your news. I'd certainly get two replacements and get the inevitable squabbles over and done with in one go.

Olly
That's very sad so sorry to hear that. I don't know of this breeder personally, but I looked them up (in the FAQs thread, under 'where to buy chickens') for a friend who lives in Suffolk, they are near Eye. Hope they can help you. http://www.hen-house.co.uk/index.html

Guest
So sorry to hear this. I would concur with the others, get another 2 girls and get them soon so Ermintrude doesn't get too lonely. I introduced one new hen to my existing two after I lost my Amber and she did have a very hard time but I didn't want four in the Eglu. Three is a good number. chelsea
so sorry about flo, I know exactly how you feel. When our Sam died, I really didnt want to get another hen as we didnt feel we could replace her. But it wasnt fair on Ella to keep her alone. We in fact, got 3 more hens and she has had a new lease of life - she is so lively and active since we got a bigger flock. My advice to you is to definitely get another hen, 2 hens would be ideal if you can. and get them asap if you can.

MrsDaisy
the lady we got the banties from is willing to let us have one of her layers, hopefully this will help Ermie who can probably be heard from miles around.

MrsDaisy
we've put her inside for a bit, she was upsetting the banties, the neighbours, their dogs, and she's happily eating now. let's hope the new arrival helps her with Flo's loss. I'm so sad, poor Flo.
