Lesley
Excellent news!,,, sorry Eggcellent news It can't happen overnight as the infrastructure will have to change - but it is a very good move. Perhaps the supermarkets do listen to their customers then?
Egluntyne
Fantastic news. Another of those small steps that make up a long journey.

bronze
Does that include in their own products?
Christian
No, I think this is referring to the sale of battery eggs only. I am pretty sure that Waitrose and M&S don't use battery eggs in their own brand foods, but waiting to be corrected..........

They also don't use or sell broiler chicken meat and only sell free range/organic chicken products. And why doesn't it surprise me that Tesco's haven't joined in with this pledge. Egluntyne
And why doesn't it surprise me that Tesco's haven't joined in with this pledge. They will when they see their sales targets not being reached.
ubereglu
Actually that's probably true. My sister used to work in Tesco and she saw someone she knew who worked there during October. Her friend now works in the cash office and her opinion of Tesco is that they no longer care about the customer and just want to make money. Now, when your staff are saying that it's not good is it? Martin B
And why doesn't it surprise me that Tesco's haven't joined in with this pledge. They will when they see their sales targets not being reached. No Tesco or Asda, the two biggest supermarket retail chains in this country. There is no mention of them not using caged eggs in their own products so I look forward to hearing what else comes of the article. At least it is a step forward this time.. Guest
All we need now is for smaller shops to take note. The ONLY eggs sold in our nearest shop are from caged hens - about 1/4 of a mile up the road from me . Yesterday I realised the assistant didn't even realise they were battery - she just sells them as "local eggs" I pointed out the small writing that said "eggs from caged hens". Later I was in the local farm shop and a chap was looking at the SAME "local" eggs. James said "oh we don't need eggs" I said (in a very loud voice) NO, we have free range eggs at home, these are NASTY BATTERY EGGS. The chap sort of looked at me but when I saw him at the till I noticed he had instead taken 6 of the loose eggs - which are from a different local provider - free range. These "local eggs" really get my goat as people don't read the small writing. Come on, in a farm shop they think "healthy free range" don't they. And the village shop, "Ooops, word censored!"ody in there is so hard up they couldn't pay a bit more for free range eggs, hard up people couldn't afford to live in that village (not our village - which has a council estate next to the school). Oooh I'm getting on my soepbox again. I keep doing this in school and teaching kids about this stuff too - definately NOT on the ICT curriculum! chelsea
This is on a similar subject but refers to meat and not eggs. Me and hubby were reading yesterday online that a lot of the chicken in Co-op, Boots, and Tescos pre packed sandwiches comes from either Brazil or Thailand and the reason for this - "because welfare standards in Brazil are better than the uk" (they are having a larf !! ). The company my husband catches chicken for slaughters over 500,000 chicken a week for meat - where on earth does all that go then if supermarkets are buying in from Brazil, Thailand, Argentina and the Netherlands????? I think its terrible that a good producing country like Great Britian with good welfare standards needs to import anything Sorry, but it makes me SO angry. lisa33
I think smaller shops are coming round a bit too. BC (b4 chooks) we went to our local cornershop to get some eggs. When we asked if they had any free range we were told that 'People round here won't buy Free Range as they are too expensive!' When we argued that we lived here and we wanted some we were told that we must live in the 'Posh Part' (we don't ). We have never bought eggs from this shop but when Andyman popped in for something the other day he noticed that they had started to sell Free Range. chelsea
I pester everyone I know about free range eggs. I made one of my work colleagues feel bad the other day and was telling her how little room a battery hen has. Last week she texted me from Sainsburys saying she was buying free range!! Even if a few of us spread the word - it will pass on to others ....etc...etc.
