Tessa the Duchess
Indeed, great news what an enlightened Council you have. I can't see our local council doing it, or if they did it would just be another excuse for a big hike in Council tax Tessa

Guest
they are not my local council but they are nearby. I have just mailed my MP and asked what our council's policy on eggs was and would they consider following wirral's lead. I hope you're all going to mail your local councils

Joojoo
bravo Jules, I bet you had a part in that! I did write to them, but so did a lot of other people. I'm just really pleased that they've done something about it. They initially replied to my email saying that they would definitely look into the pros and cons of free range eggs but I was a bit sceptical as to whether they would actually go for it. I've emailed them again to say thanks very much for making a small but significant difference to the lives of millions of battery hens. Hopefully some other councils will take the step now. Does anyone know if any other local authorities have done this apart from Wirral and Shropshire? x

Joojoo
That's brilliant news hun I must have missed that one too. It seems that the little man or woman off the street can make a difference after all which is very reassuring.

Strepsy
That's brilliant! Well done everyone who has written. Does anyone have a template letter they could post? I would like to write to our local council but wouldn't know what to say.
Guest
well, this is what I put..... Dear Mr Twigg I have just heard on the news that Wirral Council have banned the use of battery eggs from all their council run schools and care homes, in favour of free range eggs. I wondered if you could let me know if it is a policy of Halton Council to use free range eggs in their council owned buildings and, if not, would the council please consider doing so? My husband and I rescued 4 battery hens in October, they live in our garden and provide us with copious eggs and manure for our compost heap. They are the most delightful pets and provide us with hours of entertainment. It’s horrible to think of the life they had prior to coming to us and I think all councils should follow the lead of Wirral Council. Here’s a link to a video of our girls, I’d love for you to take the time to view it and also to consider my request. Kind Regards my name and address etc it seemed to work so you're free to use any bits of it you feel appropriate. Let us know what response you get. Strepsy
Thanks Poet, that gives me lots to work on. I don't have the added gravitas of keeping ex-bats but I will certainly mention my own.
