Battery hen jumpers - ADVICE FROM BHWT PLEASE READ

Recommended Posts

I started one last night in bright red

I only managed a paltry ten rows but its a start

The plan tonight is to do another ten :?

I am toying with the idea of making the collar and warming flap in charcoal grey as a contrast - what do you think 8)

Should that be a poultry 10 rows!

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

I've finished 8)

This is my first creation and it is called "Shocking"

Well done. It looks super.

I took the jumper into work today and asked everyone to guess what it was  After a lot of clues  someone guessed the answer, I now owe her a Creme egg

Got a few sympathetic looks from a few people  and my boss asked if I needed to lie down  One particular person asked why as they are only chickens

Anyway, I have started another jumper. Black edges with a goldy coloured main part. the lucky chicken may end up looking like a bumble bee

Maybe my boss was right and I do need to lie down  Never mind I am happy in my little world 8)

ok, here's my first one - my knitting skills are very rusty, and it's a bit less tidy than I would like but I've got the hang of the pattern now I think - no.2 is on the needles already. (I'm not doing so many stripes again, too many ends to darn in!)

It's lovely to see all the enthusiasm to help our lovely ex batts and it's so very kind. I remember some time ago we had a lot of knitters sending in designs for various jumpers and having spoken to HQ I have found that sadly the trialled jumpers caused some problems. Really don't want to dampen your enthusiasm but we had so many problems we have found that it is far better to keep them warmly housed, with tlc and warm mash.

Mine are fine and coping very well with the temperatures of -7

Just wanted to let you know where the BHWT stand.

Thanks

BBX

Don't know what people want to do in the light of this advice. Sorry if I've caused people to waste their time. I'll contact Laughing Hens about this to. Obviously, these particular jumpers have not been trialled by the BHWT as the pattern was designed for a competition to design one which doesn't catch on their legs. I'm happy to do whatever people want to do.

Sorry again to have wasted anyone's time with this

I for one would definately still want them for my girlies. I'm not sure why these would cause problems, as you said little chickadee, it was designed not to catch their legs and their wings are free too. Unless there is another reason why they shouldn't wear them?

Well I'm still knitting - obviously not all ex-battery hens need them, some do come with quite a few feathers, but I'm willing to produce a few on the basis that they might come in handy, even if only for the first week or so.

I take your point entirely Buffie, and perhaps these ones will prove to be a better fit than the ones that were tried before.

I'm afraid I am having so much fun making them, that I don't really mind if they are not used much, although I would love to see a picture of someone's hen 'modelling' them in due course! It has to be what's best for the hens, and if they are not needed then I don't mind.

Him Indoors asked if I was knitting for someone's baby.

The expression on his face when I told him it was for a hen was priceless.

You'll have to post a picture of 'that look' Egluntine :lol: At least you didn't tell him that you were expecting!!! That's given him a coronary!

You are not kidding. We'd be in the Guiness Book of Records.:lol:
