UkButton
I was reading another thread in all things green and the question of ants came up. It got me thinking does anyone get ants in the garden and how do the chickens respond? Hopefully they eat them!
Cinnamon
I once split a bag of wood chips in the girls pen,not knowing there was an ants nest in it. They didn't last long!
Laura & CTB
We had lots of flying ants coming out of the decking last year - Prada ate one and spat the next one out and Gucci just looked at them -so that was the end of that
sebowyer
We had a couple of ants' nests totally and systematically destroyed by Barbara - scratch, peck peck peck peck. Pause. Scratch, peck peck peck peck. Eventually the ants gave up.
Olly
mine discovered a nest of flying ants last year ... it was very funny to watch, they scoffed them up but they must have been a bit spicy because every gulp was followed by a sort of shake of the head! they still kept going back for more though. lozkate
I seem to recall something about ant giving off formic? acid when threatened. I'd imagine that the quantities are not big enough to prove a hazard to the avarage chook but may well account for the 'spicy' nature! Looking forward to summer, we often have them! Charlottechicken
Mine absolutely adore ants of every variety They even chase flies, moths and wasps around the garden too ( and usually catch them ) I was horrified when Cheeky caught her first wasp, and ate it before I could stop her. Since then I just have to get out of the way and hope she is OK after her dodgy meal.
