Louise
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4815776.stm I wonder how ethically produced the body shop will become now they are part of the least ethically produced French cosmetics company What do you guys think
Chicken on a mission
I'm not hopefull that the spirit in which the company was started will continue
Guest
"L'Oreal said it planned to operate the British company as a stand-alone business with Anita Roddick remaining in her current role as consultant." So, no change then..... grd's prediction: As is usual with takeovers, L'Oreal will probably leave things as they are for 12 months or so. After which, Roddick will leave (or get pushed) and then.... L'Oreal will make changes. The Body Shop chain will decline and there will be shop closures and redundancies. After 5 years L'Oreal will try to sell off the Body Shop to someone else, and Roddick will buy it back for a fraction of the cost. Or maybe not... Cinnamon
I heard that this was in the air a couple of weeks ago. Very suprised it has happened though
Popcorn
Hasn't Roddick given away her money from the ssle to various charities?
Cinnamon
I just hope she has made some sort of stipulation in the contract that Body Shop must continue in the same fashion as it is now....ethically sound ,no animal testing etc. Has anyone else noticed how expensive Body Shop has got over the last few years, actually? I certainly don't shop there as often now as when I was working
Mel (& Paul)
I like lush (if you see what I mean ) I do find Body shop quite expensive but I guess there are more competitors in the market so there are other places we can go

buffie
I like lush (if you see what I mean ) I do find Body shop quite expensive but I guess there are more competitors in the market so there are other places we can go Sadly I think the body shop boomed and didn't move with the times. I have to be honest I haven't shopped there for years and won't be now! BBx

motherhen
I think Roddick only has a minority share-holding, so may not have had much say in the takeover. It seems to be a sad trend that small ethical independant companies get taken over by multinationals who use the brand name - whether the brand continues to be as ethical........ Sheilaz
.....and I think L'Oreal is part of Nestle.............
motherhen
Is there anything that Nestle doesn't own? Just seen Roddick on Ch4 news, saying how she was looking forward to the takeover and how the BodyShop philosophy would influence L'Oreal - in her dreams Plus 3 years ago she was really slating L'Oreal on her website
Guest
Nestlé own nearly 50% of L'Oreal (apparently).

motherhen
It is...so that's another shop I won't be going into now! Same here We are really lucky up here - there is an organic supermarket only 30 mins walk away so I can get alternatives to my fave Body Shop products there It's called Out of this World and I know there is at least one more elsewhere in the country. Aylana
Motherhen, is out of this world expensive? I have been past it loads of times but OH won't let me go in incase I start buying lots of expensive things. But if its not too expensive then I will just pop in when he is at work! I haven't been to Bodyshop in years but I do treat myself to some stuff from Lush occasionally.
chocchick
Used to go to the body shop a lot about 10 years ago, my friends all bought each other stuff from there. Then it suddenly seemed horribly expensive. I love lush, just found it a few months ago. Now I have deodorant bars, shaving cream, facial wash, shampoo bars, lip balm (chocolate orange mmm )bath bombs, massage bar, foot cream etc. etc. John used to worry when I shopped at Boots as I bought so much stuff. He still looks worried if we have to walk through it.....
Cate in NZ
I went off Body Shop several years ago, I sort of felt that it got caught in a bit of a warp, and didn't really change or update, so I got bored with it. It also seemed expensive for what you got, in my opinion. So i swapped allegiance to Lush as well (I have a shop quite local to me, so I'm lucky, can go there as often as I want ). Lush isn't cheap either, but I believe that their products are fresh and real, they smell and look nice... and do what they say they do. I'm also of the opinion that it's an independent chain, not owned by some big multi-national giant, please tell me if I've got that wrong though
Cinnamon
Yes Kate, you are right,Lush are an indepandant retailer. I have used them for years - when I was in my 20's they used to be called Cosmetics To Go,& only did mail order. I am horribly hooked on the Lush bath bombs & bubbble Bar Slices,& yes the lip balm too I literally have to run past the new Reading shop to stop myself going in......and you can smell it (Yummy!) before you see it too
Lesley
I stopped using Bodyshop years ago - they kept discontinuing the items I used to buy and then wouldn't give me a refund on a lipstick I bought which was the wrong colour because there was a mix up in their labelling - My leg was in full plaster cast so I'd asked Carl to go and buy a Number 14 lipstick. Got home and tried it once, realised the colour was wrong and so had to go back - on crutches - but they said their policy was not to exchange if it had been used, even though it had a Number 11 sticker on the end Luckily - Lush is just a few doors away
