missuscluck
I was wondering today about large coffee jars. Since I have started to shop monthly I have been buying very large jars of gold blend with plastic screw top lids. I wonder if I put them through the dish washer weather they would be ok for rhubarb scnapps or the blackberry gin.
Charlottechicken
I was wondering today about large coffee jars. Since I have started to shop monthly I have been buying very large jars of gold blend with plastic screw top lids. I wonder if I put them through the dish washer weather they would be ok for rhubarb scnapps or the blackberry gin. I have found to my cost that jars which originally had dry ingredients are not airtight and not suitable for liquids If I can't use them for sugar/flour/pasta I tend to recycle them. The Kilner Man
As there seems to be some interest in old style Kilner Jars maybe I can give you all some information. The Original Kilner Jar was made between 1919 and 1948 this has a glass lid which fitted over the top of the jar and is marked "The Kilner Jar reg". From 1948 until 1969 they made the Improved jar marked" The Kilner Jar Improved reg" on this jar the glass lid fits inside the neck of the jar. In 1969 they changed to the Dual Purpose jar with a metal/rubber sealing disc this was made until 1978. The final jar was the Ravenhead Kilner jar with a Red or Orange plastic screw top and a glass lid which fits inside the neck of the jar. This jar was discontinued in the late 1980's and Kilner stopped making parts in the mid 1990's. I have always bottled fruit and because I couldnt get sealing rings I had a quantity made and sold the surplus on the internet. Snowy
That's really interesting, thanks for that! So the ones I have were made between 1919 and 1948 Must count up how many rings I need and get them restored
missuscluck
This is all very interesting stuff. Isnt it great to find you have antique kitchenalia. I have abandoned the idea of using the coffee jars and I think the nisbets site is brilliaint and will order from there for the boozy fruit. Guest
just thought I'd let you know, the seals from nisbets came very quickly indeed. Put one on an ikea jar with some water in, turned it upside down, it still leaked! So, put 2 seals on and it was fine. Ian suggested using 1 nisbets seal plus the original one that came with the ikea jar. This still leaked a tiny bit but not enough to worry about. We're not going to be storing the jars upside down so we're using 1 nisbets seal and the original ikea seal on each jar. thanks for the advice, certainly cheaper than having to replace the jars. Mrs Frugal
I ordered some replacement seals and lids for my old Kilner and Ravenhead jars from www.Kilnerjarsuk.co.uk on Thursday and they arrived today. Great service .
bronze
I found a bit out about kilner jars by watching the Jeremy Clarkson ' who do you think you are'. He might not be your favourite person but its worth watching fot he historic content alone.

missuscluck
Popped into Dunelm mill tonight whilst killing some time waiting for my son to come out of scouts and they sell kilner jars. I bought two different sized ones. They were reasonable, £!.99 and £1.69. It says on the side they are air tight so I will give it a go and see, then get some more if they are ok.
