Guest
anyone know where i can get the proper airtight kilner jars, the heavy duty ones not the Ikea ones or failing that, some reasonably priced 1 and 2 litre screw top jars or something similar (must be airtight). Been googling and got frustrated as not found anything yet. thanks.
Christian
Poet, the ikea ones do work well, but you need to replace the seal with a proper rubber one. The plastic ones that come with the jars from Ikea are rubbish and crack/leak. Most cook shops sell the rubber seals for about 50p each. Le Parfait do kilner jars
Cinnamon
I got some on eBay,but why don't you also try Freecycle - you never know! I also bought a whole heap of them in all different sizes from Nisbits, & they are nice & heavy duty. They only sell proper catering gear,so they won't have leaky ones http://www.nisbets.co.uk/products/ProductList.asp?TopGroupCode=C10&ParentGroupCode=S282&GroupCode=2126

Charlottechicken
Sometimes older type hardware stores sell the seals, I know a place in Redditch, Worcestershire who do, and can buy some now my mum has just stumbled across a cardboard box filled with genuine old kilner jars in her loft I have of course offered to re-home them for her

If so, I have a load of those, but need some replacement seals and metal rings for them.
Charlottechicken
Claire are they the original screw top jars with the two part lid - a metal screw piece and a glass disc? If so, I have a load of those, but need some replacement seals and metal rings for them. That sounds very much like them Snowy, from what I remember. I didn't look yesterday, we were upstairs trying to sort out mum's substantial hoard of 'stuff' in the loft and she found them and told me. She actually told me there's a stall in the Rag Market which sells the seals. Is the metal ring you refer to the part of the lid which holds the glass bit on? Not sure what you do if that bit goes

They sell them in the Sheffield branch. thanks Eg, it's due to open anytime soon http://www.johnlewis.com/Shops/DSTemplate.aspx?Id=524 I had a look on their website and you can get them on line too. Aren't they gorgeous! I didn't realise they had 'le parfait' embossed on the glass. I might not be able to wait til the shop opens

Not sure what you do if that bit goes Yes that's them! Wow, didn't think I'd be able to get any more seals for them. The metal screw tops do hold the glass discs in place. They are still usable, but tarnished and rough. But the rubber seals had completely given up the ghost. I was given 2 dozen of them! Please let me know if you are still able to get the seals! Guest
I just ordered 10 seals from the Nisbets link Sarah gave me, would they be right for you Snowy?
Snowy
No I don't think so Poet, thanks anyway. These jars are quite old and seal differently.
Mrs Frugal
Snowy, are your jars the old fashioned Kilner jars? If so, there's a website which sells replacement parts including the rubber seals which I've been unable to get in shops. A friend gave me a big box of Kilner jars he didn't need anymore and they are nearly all without seals and this site sell the right ones - hope they're the right sort for you too . http://www.kilnerjarsuk.co.uk/

Wow, I didn't realise how old they were! (and I'm cringing at how many I threw out when I was given the box ) Thanks for that Kate - this forum is such an aladdin's cave! Mrs Frugal
I must put in an order for some seals so I can use all my jars too. It's such a shame to have them sat in the cupboard all clean and..........empty .
Charlottechicken
Kate thanks for that link I have put it on my favourites list I have had to go back into mums loft and check these out! I have what looks like original Kilners too, but they don't say anything on them Mum swears they were used by her grandmother, so they must be 60 years old. I have 14 of them. I think there are 10 tall ones and 4 smaller ones (2lb and 1lb?). They all have a pink rubber ring inside and they look OK, but now I know what I am looking for I will check that the market sells the replacements. Woo hoo, more kitchen antiques (I am now saving up for a bigger kitchen - seriously )
The Dogmother
I love kitchen antiques too Claire - I've got lots of handmedowns and I love using them.
Mrs Frugal
If they have seals in them, you'd be best getting replacements if you can as they've probably perished by now and won't make a suitable seal for whatever you put inside, unfortunately. It's amazing how quickly the rubber deteriorates even after a few years - as I've found with some of mine .
