Louise
Has something been applied to the skin to prevent the pigment from forming like a suntan tatoo
Lesley-Jean
I would imagine so, before it was ripened. I'll be peeling it
motherhen
Are you sure it isn't a digital fake I know you can use a shaped patch to get something like a heart on a growing apple, but the detail in this seems suspiciously fine
Lesley-Jean
It's no fake. I bought the apple this morning (from the dreaded Tesco) and took the picture myself. I think they must have used some kind of mask (either physical or chemical) to prevent the pale area from ripening.
motherhen
I'll believe you - anyone who can confess to shopping in the dreaded Tesco must be very truthful
Guest
The thing is, it doesn't look like a Tesco code under the bar code. I could be wrong, but I've never seen a 9 number code on any of our fresh fruit and veg. It's normally a 4 number code for plu's to be used at the check outs, and an 8 number code starting with 09 for the Tesco product number. Someone at the farm must have been having a giggle! Guest
Tch, just read that back to myself - I must remember - I don't work there anymore so it isn't 'our fruit and veg'!!!!!!!!!!

chocchick
Is it just on that apple or was it on all of them? Wierd.
Popcorn
How bizarre. I was going to say it's photographic trickery....but you actually took the pic yourself of your own apple!!
Cate in NZ
Yuk If it's for real and not photographic tickery or farm pranksters then I somehow find it distasteful. I suppose I should be applauding the fact that it saves resources.... no bag or label required , but somehow it smacks of engineering our food again.... and I don't like it. Bit of a gut reaction there and not a clearly thought out response, but no
Lesley-Jean
Is it just on that apple or was it on all of them? Wierd. A lot but I don't think all. I'll admit I was shocked and will not be eating the skin incase they have put something on it. I don't think they scanned it at the checkout ( some of the otheres had regylar type labels on them. Perhaps it is something they do on the farm for ease of processing Edited April 6, 2006 by Guest

motherhen
I'm hoping to get a very few apples this year from my new apple trees, so I'll know exactly what I'm eating

Perhaps it is something they do on the farm for ease of processing The thing is, apples are sold by weight, not by quantity, unless you are buying prepacked apples. Prepacked apples have the bar code on the packaging, loose apples have a PLU number (normally, in tesco at least, 4 digits) which the checkout operator types in to get the product price/kilo. Perhaps you should give your local store a phone and tell them what you have found - there may be a perfectly logical explanation for it, but it's only a few weeks since I left, and I'm sure I would have heard if they were planning to bring out a range of barcoded fruit and veg - I worked in fresh stock control, and would have noticed if there was any memos!
