Scotty
Is this normal?? I've just watched as Gerty has laid her first egg of the day in the garden, in a nice sunny spot behind a leafy bush... At first I thought she was trying to cover up the egg, but she's walked away from the egg, stops every few steps to pick up a leaf, piece of grass, twig etc and places it on her back not sure whats she's up to? but she's been doing this for about 5 mins now... looks very comical. Christian
A couple of mine do this. I think it is nesting behaviour. I often find bits of twig/grass in the nest box

chelsea
it does look very comical, my maran does it every time she lays shel'll pace around the garden or the run and bung allsorts on her back. Even if I peep in the nestbox when she is sat she is still doing it, funny things eh?
Jules.
That's how we know Buzz was coming into lay- she would put shredded paper on her back from the nest box.
Ziggy
If it's leaves and twigs, maybe it's a camouflage thing... I'm telling you, those chooks are up to something... camouflage on one hand, and on the other digging trenches... there's a war in the poultry world that we humans are unaware about... Okie, Okie, maybe I watch too much tv
Scotty
Isn't is amazing that they know how to do this, when she is an ex battery hen. This was her first time of laying outside of the Metal Cage that she was previously housed in. I find this all totally fascinating. So clever
