argent13uk
Hello all, Well Chicken Nugget must have felt left behind as she must be laying eggs too! We are getting two eggs a day now. Though she has become a lot more vocal in the last two days and her comb is very red compared to earlier in the week. I feel like a proper chicken owner now as going into the nest and retrieveing my eggs is a great moment every day. My 3 year old daughter likes collecting them but has a tendancy to drop them. Trying to find a nice old fashioned egg basket to collect and keep them in. How many eggs a week should you eat? I think it's the novelty but we are eating one a day with our toast soldiers! Does that novelty ever wear off? I hope not. Tiffany
ajm200
Has she got a bucket and spade from the seaside? If she has you could put something soft in the bucket and get her to use that as a basket until you find something better. The government are always changing their advice about what we should and shouldn't eat. I believe you are supposed to restrict yourself to 2 a week as they are high in colesterol but if you followed all of their advice you'd eat practically nothing, so go with your own instincts. You know what the rest of your diet is like and how your general health is. BTW - pls excuse my spelling.

alih
how exciting! Yes, I say thank you to my 2 every morning when I go for the eggs and call them by their names - my kids think it's hilarious ( except for my 4-year-old who thinks it's totally normal to talk to animals!) eggypeggy
The novelty still hasn't warn off for me. I've had my two chooks for 11 months and I still feel smug when I collect our eggs. My 3 year old races up the garden to collect the eggs before me, so I know what you mean. He pulls them out and I try and grab them off him as soon as I can before he drops them. So I might look for a basket too. I eat loads of eggs, more than I should I'm sure, I try to eat them every other day as opposed to every day! superjules
We always say thank you for our eggs too! DD had 3 of Yum-yum's eggs boiled today for lunch - but they're only 30g each. We eat pretty healthily so I don't think it will do her any harm.
Ain't Nobody Here
Two eggs a week . I think anyone on here would be hard pressed to limit their intake to that . Two a day perhaps .
emmaw298
it used to be thought that eggs were bad for our cholesterol, but now we know that eggs actually contain a different type of cholesterol to that in our blood called 'dietary cholesterol', so the effect of eggs on our blood cholesterol levels is not as significant as once thought and actually much more linked to saturated fat intake. It is also commonly thought that if you eat too many eggs you can become 'eggbound' - basically constipated (different to chickens getting eggbound!), but actually this is probably because the way british people typically tend to eat eggs are in dishes that don't contain significant sources of fibre - eggs on toast, eggs on a fry up, plain omelettes etc. As long as you are eating sufficient fruit and veg and drinking enough fluid this shouldn't be a problem! So there is no specific guidance as to how many eggs you can eat a week and in fact they are a very good source of high biological value (HBV) protein. But remember its always important to eat a balanced and varied diet!
Ain't Nobody Here
That's excellent news . Let's hope everyone on the forum reads your very informative post! (In fact, maybe you could do a new post for information - I believed in the old cholesterol and "egg-bound" facts so perhaps others do too!) emmaw298
ahhh shucks, now I'm embarrassed there are lot of common myths about foods actually... always check out the foods standards agency for evidence based advice (www.food.gov.uk)
Ain't Nobody Here
No need, it was obviously about time I had that myth dispelled . I always like to share good news (especially chicken-related!) so if you don't mind, I'd like to post your bit of information in "Eggs" just in case there's another dinosaur like me around .
