Which one layes the eggs? - resolved

Recommended Posts

Hi, Yesterday I got our first egg (hurray) and today identical one again.

The question is from which hen it came. I have Sky (Skyline) which has a massive comb but is a rather slim delicate hen, who could run for England and is not crouching at all:-) The other possibility is Erika (Isa), which is amazingly friendly hen who crouches down any time I want to pet her but does not have much of a comb.

Now, the eggs are light brown. What is the bigger indicator for them to lay? The red comb or crouching?

I wonder whether it's Erika. I tend to think that it's the crouching that indicates whether they laying and also you can tell (although maybe not pleasant  ) if you put your hand on their bottom near the vent and feel for the two bones, if they far apart then they laying, if not then they probably not. Our Rosie doesn't have a very big comb it's quite short but it's red and she is laying whereas our speckledy has a larger bright red comb and she's not laying! It does take time finding out who's egg was who's, if the egg colours are that similar it may be impossible to tell. We are fortunate that all three of ours lay different colours/types.

Hi FORENSICA,

A BIG point I missed earlier!! because I used to calling Skylines Columbines which is another name for them.

Another thing is our Columbine (Skyline) "Matilda" lays white eggs, the breeder said only 70% lay coloured blue/green. But of course yours may, but if not coloured then the egg should be white. We don't mind that ours is white as Matilda is our most friendlist hen and I know you shouldn't have a favourite cause they all lovely but...... :D

I see! Somehow I thought that they will lay either blue/green or brown. That is great! Thanks for the detective work, it looks like Erika is the one  More corn for her
