Couperwife
can anyone help here? I've been down at the parents for the last 2 weeks looking after my mum (thats why I havent been here) dad has been in hospital, I wont go into the details cos thats not the important bit, but he has been in intensive care and rather poorly. anyway, its their 40th wedding anniversary at the beginning of June and they had booked a holiday, but not cannot go. so heres the tricky bit. - they didnt book any travel insurance as they rather book it separately so they dont spend a fortune and get a better deal. so, what I am asking is, do they really have to pay half the amount of the holiday and cut their losses, or does anyone know a way round this. the holiday company are saying "we understand - but tough" any advice would be great. thanks cathy x
Keanie Bean
Write a complaining letter, and if they dont listen keep writing more complaing letters. It should only be a deposit they loose. I hope you find a way, holiday companies are so mean, I used to work for one Sarah.x
susanbb
You could perhaps ask the hospital consultant to compose a letter of support to the holiday company to explain that he is not able to go on the holiday due to his illness.
little chickadee
keep badgering them as companies will see what they can get away with at first. If you have no joy, go to your local press. We did that when I had to return a second hand car after 10 miles and amazingly the full refund was very quickly forthcoming. Companies hate bad press and will do anything to avoid it. meezers
Some companies are more understanding than others, I doubt they could just cancel and get their money back, but what about moving the holiday to a different date , or could your parents 'sell' the holiday to someone else if the company would allow a name change ? chelsea
Are they flying? Is it an independant booking with flights booked via the airline and seperate hotel or a package deal? I work for an airline and for illness on production of doctors letter/hospital letter we usually change tickets free of charge. I would maybe try to speak to someone at head office/customer services and hope they are sympathetic. Hope your dad gets well soon Cathy. All the best. Couperwife
thanks for all the replies. they are flying (or were ) mum spoke to someone who said, the best that they can do is half price of the holiday, they couldnt change the dates at they would never sell the holiday again (they dont fly until 31st May - I swore at that point ) the only problem is that mum isnt in the right frame of mind to argue the point. i think she has given them permission to speak to my brother - he is very good at this thing, so i'll tell him to keep pushing. cathy x

Even if they give your mum and dad a credit note that would help. We give out them at work - they dont hold any monetary value, it just means customers can "hold" their booking over and then rebook when they are able. hennymom
I may be missing the point totally, but if they don;t pay how are the holiday company gonna make them, have they just paid a deposit up to now... if anyonew pays a deposit then fails to fulfill the rest of the payment they lose the holiday if it's only the deposit they have paid i'lll cut my losses and forfeit it...if they have paid more go see citizens advice, they very helpful!
