Only 33 people have signed so far Come on guys! It's here: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/chookwelfare/ I encourage you to sign and get your friends and family to sign too, we can get this to the PM! Rhapsody
Sorry but we've argued this one before. If the UK were to do this it would make UK reared poultry more expensive and there is a majority out there that only buy food based on price. Cheap imports from other parts of the EU and further afield would flood our market, put the UK poultry industry down the pan and hey air miles anyone?Traceability? Accountability? If you think I'm alarmist, next time you are in the supermarket check out how much British pork there is for sale, and how much more expensive it is because we have banned farrowing crates in the UK. British pork farmers are going out of business every day. As I've said before, this is only meaningful if coupled with a ban on poultry imports, and in a free market that can never happen. The spirit of this petition is bang on and I dont want to **** on anyone's chips but I wont sign.
Tara.F
well I have. And I've copied and pasted the link to other forums I use too. I agree with Rhapsody about the banning of cheap foreign imports but I feel it is not beyond imagination that the same rules of rearing be applied to imports. Either way, I am tired of being told by supermarkets that customers demand cheap chicken I therefore added my voice to those 'demanding' more respectful treatment of animals
puffball
i have signed it and although i agree people do want cheap meat i think that the animal itself should be treated correctly. i'm sending the link round...
daj198
As I've said before, this is only meaningful if coupled with a ban on poultry imports I agree. I think imports should be banned too, I think CIWF are doing a campaign to stop the shipping of live animals for slaughter, the imported chickens would probably be slaughtered abroad though to make it cheaper. I would have added a ban on imports to the petition but I didn't start it. Thanks for sending the link on guys, we need at least 200 signatures to get a response.... cheap government! lol

kaylis1980
i signed it because i agree about imports being banned for meat we also have the land and facilitys to breed here in the UK- we are completely able to be self sufficient as a nation in this way- we just need to demand it. Mutrix Farmers
Signed. Why should this just apply to the UK, we belong to the EU after all, why can't it be adopted Europe wide?
daj198
Why should this just apply to the UK, we belong to the EU after all, why can't it be adopted Europe wide? Good point! The French probably wouldn't like it though.... we Brits couldn't suggest it, we'd have to persuade Germany to put it forward! lol
Chickaboo
I have just been stuck in traffic, behind a lorry packed (and I mean packed) full of chickens in crates - some poking their heads out to see. One dead, with its head hanging out. I nearly cried. So I've just signed the petition - no animals should ever be treated like that so people in this country can have cheap meat. As far as I'm aware "Ooops, word censored!"ody in the Uk has ever starved from eating meat a few less times a week.
LJ's Chooks
76.... Oh I do hope this happens and a ban on 2 for a fiver chickens too...
daj198
As far as I'm aware "Ooops, word censored!"ody in the Uk has ever starved from eating meat a few less times a week. Exactly! Some people say "I can't afford free range". Then eat less meat! The UK tradition of having meat at every meal is ridiculous. It takes 9 tonnes of feed to produce 1 tonne of beef, we can't go on eating so much meat. It's not sustainable.
*mummy_hen*
I think there should be a ban on all non free-range meats, eggs, etc. full stop. I totally agree with all of you that if you can't afford free-range....eat less! The thing i hate most is people who say "well i don't agree with it", yet in the next breath say they do still buy it!!! Grrrr! Well done to everyone signing up.
