SarahJo
Have just been onto to www.countyourchickens.co.uk and they have added a "Handy Hen House" and a Hendividual house .. for hens that want to be alone, on their website ....... , trying to get an angle on Omlet business I think, as they pitch at the Fun having hens .. maybe 2/3 fat hens or 3/4 Bantams. Nicola H
Sarah thank you so much for that, I was thinking of building a seperate house for Bunty because she won't let Babs & Ginger in the Eglu at the moment........She pecked me and made such a racket this afternoon because I was cleaning it out.........So I have been drawing some designs out for a summer house to accommodate her while she is broody, looking at your link has given me some great ideas I have drawn it out and written down the dimensions I think I should be able to make it for less than £115 and then I can paint a design on it.........Thanks again it is just what I have been looking for and should look good next to the Eglu........I will post pics when I finish it...... Katie
ohh yeh, just been on the link - they look cute don't they! it's very basic though, not as good as our eglu's me don't think . Doesn't come with a run or anything and doesn't look very fox-proof. also does it have roosting bars or nesting box?
Katie
good luck with it nicola!
Nicola H
Thanks Katie, you are right I think it does need some modification, like ventilation and a nest and roosting bars I am going to try and build it this week.....................
Katie
you'll definatly be able to make one for alot cheaper than £115, it seems rather expensive for a bit of wood and paint really. i hope bunty will like her new house
Kizzamozza
To be honest, if I was buying chickens I would not get anything else than a good old eglu (and no im not being payed to say this). I just think that a fox could easily break into one of those wooden things.
SarahJo
I thought these looked flimsy too ... and only raised the topic so you could see what the possible Eglu competition is coming up with. There marketing quotes are going along the lines of Omlets, with easy maintenence, back yard, small garden chicken keeping ..... but a poor substitute for our Eglu's. Nicola H
They do look flimsy and I was thinking it over last night they don't have anywhere for the droppings to go so will get very smelly, I just need something temporary so that Bunty can have her own space either that or she can go back into the anti-broody cage.............. motherhen
A lot of our 'broody houses' started life as a wooden box and bits of fireguard. With it being temporary you wont need to worry about pitched roofs or anything - just make it as fox proof as you can. Also a broody and chicks will need a flat base rather than roosting bars, so that makes it even easier.
buffie
Hello there, I sent off for the catalogue or is that henalogue (bloomin' awful joke, sorry) Some fun ideas and I had a personal message on the compliments slip which I appreciated! Small company type thing. Anyway saw it and thought it would be a fun outdoor shelter, dustbath idea, perhaps smaller scale think Mikey may have ago at this and I can paint it. It will be a fun summer project. This is a bit like 'why don't you', oh that's a sign of age! Bx
motherhen
I saw a photo of the new bunnylu or pet eglu as they are calling it in the latest edition of Grow your own (I think it was that but might have been Country Life or living or kitchen garden - getting very senior at this time of night!) Anyway it looks smaller than the eglu and I suspect has a flat floor rather than slats. I'd need to see inside but I bet it would make a good broody and chick house and run if you need something reliably foxproof. We'll have to check it out when the website gets updated. Neither of mine showing any sign of going broody despite my leaving the eggs in the nest all day and making appropriate noises But they are lovely and laying like the clappers. So I guess I have to forgive them.
Trish
"Why don't you, Why don't you, why don't go switch off your television set and go do something else less boring instead" Sorry couldn't help myself and I think we all did
Sheilaz
Yes, but you had to watch the programme 1st before switching off.........

buffie
Trish, you remember the words!! Me too... I think the double deckers were on and banana splits (did that have Arabian Knights in it, "size of an elephant"?) before it!! Oh memory lane... Lesley
Carl did his impression of Banana Splits once on top of Hellvellyn in Lake District, thinking we were alone - and a man's head popped up from behind a rock What has all this got to do with Handy Hen House? buffie
It's my fault I think because i said it reminded me of 'why don't you'. Most worrying as I can't remember what did...I'm officially mad. Better go and see if Charlie has laid her 2nd egg. Is anybody set to make this holiday home for the girls? I won't trust it for anything except a little private bath house!!
