Tessa the Duchess
...has ceased to make bread and is now making sculptures I think I need a new one, mine is 12 years old and is used 3 times a week. Which is the one that everybody has, and raves about? Tessa
Guest
Very nice Tessa, but not very practical for sandwiches I bought the Panasonic SD253, which was recommended on here I have had it about a year and a half and use it most days
chickencam
I have a Morphy Richards Fastbake which I have had for about a year and they have just replaced the breadpan free of charge because it sprang a leak. Quite a few people have these and the rest pretty much have the Panasonic. I use mine most days and would hate to be without it
Tessa the Duchess
Woa the Panasonic is quite pricey Just looked at them at Argos. Chickencam would you be kind enough to measure the height of the Morphy Richards one with the lid closed as it looks a wee bit high for the place my breadmachine lives. chickencam
33.5cm, just over 13 inches, hope that helps. I have had a few breadmakers over the last 12 years and the price of the Panasonic has always put me off, and also I believe it's main cycles are all in excess of 3-4 hours. I am too disorganised for that I would say that I get the best bread so far from this Morphy Richards, I usually use the sandwich loaf setting which makes a good sized light loaf. I was also very impressed with their customer service.
WitchHazel
The Panny is expensive, but it's a great machine. I've just upgraded to the 255 and my old 253 is still going strong in my daughter's house. The rapid bake cycle on the Panny is 1h55 mis, and I use this cycle most of all, as I love the texture of the bread. The full cycle is 4hours. Pizza dough is 45 mins, full dough setting 2h 20mins. The 255 has an extra paddle for making rye bread, which is fab. I had a couple of other machines before I bought a Panny, and I thought they were OK. But the Panny is much much better. Egluntyne
I've got a Panasonic SD 206 which I've had for about 3 years. I make bread at least every other day. I'm tempted to upgrade, but this one is still going strong. The only drawback is that I have to listen for a beep if adding dried fruit etc.

I am too disorganised for that quote] I think we've got the Panasonic 253 which does have long cycles, but it has a timer so we mostly use it to make the bread over night. Trish
I have a Panasonic, can't remember which one, and yes it was pricey but I think it was worth every penny. Mine gets used loads and has never let me down, except when I do things like not adding yeast or sugar, makes great house brick then though . Mine has a dispenser for dried fruit etc and we do make most things over night as the cycles are a bit long but that seems to improve the finished loaf. When I'm in more of a rush a use the dough option and bake in the oven but the results are never as good.
The Dogmother
I have the panasonic too and use it a lot. I make bread over night so the time isn't a problem.
redfrock
I have just upgraded to a Panasonic SD255 and think it is the business! My very first one was a cheap Asda job, some 9 years or so ago to see if I would use it. Then I bought a Russell Hobbs for half price which lasted about 4 years until the bearing started to go (I wanted a Panasonic at the time but simply couldn't stretch to it). This time I have decided to have what I really wanted and just find it better than anything before. It uses half the sugar that the RH uses in its recipes and the 50/50 loaf is gorgeous as is the spicy wholemeal fruit loaf. We use it most days, the longest between bakes is 2 days. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
chickencam
Each time I have replaced my breadmaker I have gone out with the intention of buying the Panasonic, but each time price and an offer on another one has put me off. The Morphy Richards was on offer and I was attracted by the folding paddle which does make less of a hole in the bottom but it is still there and it can be a pain when filling you have to put the first cup of flour to the side of the paddle that falls over to keep it upright. One day I will probably buy a Panasonic.
The Dogmother
Liz, you're not too far away - if you want to pop down and borrow mine for a couple of days to road test it - you are more than welcome.
Tessa the Duchess
Oh I don't know which to buy I was going to go for the MR fastbake as Chickencam gave it a good review, but I think I might get fed up with the floppy paddle issue My current one is an LG I bought it in Sainsburys yonks ago for £39, it is so simple to use, put ingredients in close lid, press start, 3 hours later you have bread, well it used to work like that, now it doesn't 3 hours later you have a misshapen lump of something I really don't know if I can justify spending £100 on a bread machine although you all seem to rave about the Panasonic. I'm procrastinating and being prudent all at the same time Tessa
The Dogmother
Do shop around for the Panasonic Tessa; when I bought mine, I found it £20 cheaper on Amazon than most other places as they were doing an offer.
Tessa the Duchess
Had a quick look on Amazon the Panasonic 255 is the same price as Argos, the other Panasonic models are out of stock. The Morphy Richards fastbake is more expensive than Argos I'll sleep on it Tessa
Seagazer
I'd love a breadmake but I don't have the space. I have very low cupboards. I've only got about 4 inches above the kettle. One day....
The Dogmother
Don't despair Seagazer - I have a tiny kitchen, so the breadmaker lives on the floor, being dragged up onto the surface when I need to use it.
Guest
I bought mine off Ebay. It was about £20 cheaper than Amazon, which was cheaper than Argos There are a couple of second hand ones on Ebay at the moment which are going for a tenner, but you have to collect. The would be good for spares etc I need to keep looking as I could do with a spare one
Seagazer
Don't despair Seagazer - I have a tiny kitchen, so the breadmaker lives on the floor, being dragged up onto the surface when I need to use it. Now there's an idea....
Charlottechicken
Don't despair Seagazer - I have a tiny kitchen, so the breadmaker lives on the floor, being dragged up onto the surface when I need to use it. Mine lives on the washing machine and when I want to use it I put it on the cooker, as there's no wall units above it
Seagazer
So really there's no excuse for me not to get one is there - apart from Prudence obviously
Charlottechicken
So really there's no excuse for me not to get one is there - apart from Prudence obviously Err, well, mine is a Cookworks breadmaker, from Argos and currently £24ish, so no need for Prudence either Edited to add, I didn't actually buy mine as I get Argos vouchers as a cashback on my credit card, so it was sort of a by product of paying the bills on credit
Seagazer
Ooh - thats a good price. Oh dear Prudence has just left the building
Charlottechicken
Ooh - thats a good price. Oh dear Prudence has just left the building I'm sure she realises she isn't needed here I ummed and ahhed over buying such a cheap model, but it is a year old now, and makes a decent loaf (also makes cake and jam but never tried those). It is not so expensive that if you find breadmaking a faff and don't use it, you won't feel bad as it wasn't too expensive, and you can always upgrade after a year or so.
