syed_king12
has anyone tried to invent new ways of making a cockarell not crow in the morinng? like tieing a elastic band around the mouth or taping it enough to open its mouth to eat NO JOKES
Mrs Frugal
Oh Syed!! You can't do that . Darkening the coop is probably the only way to keep a cockerel quiet. You can't tape his mouth up, poor boy .
syed_king12
dont worry i have not done that to my cockarell
Mrs Frugal
You had me going there for a minute, Syed . I read somewhere that if you keep the roof of the coop low enough so that he doesn't throw his head back to crow, that might work but I wouldn't guarantee it . Keeping him in the dark till a reasonable hour is the best way.
syed_king12
how about an elastic band it would hold his mouth enough to eat and drink then take it off after 8:00 pm
Mrs Frugal
Syed, you can't do that. It's cruel . If you can't cope with the noise a cockerel makes, don't get one!!
syed_king12
yes i know but im just saying
Mrs Frugal
Please don't say it then as you may give the impression that it's something which you can do. You can't.
syed_king12
dont worry i love my cockrell i would not do anything to harm the poor guy if i did do that he would go quite mad

Lesley
No, you definitely can't do that Syed The only way is to use a rooster box. You have to be very careful with ventilation and temperature within the box. Sunnyside over on the Practical Poultry forum posted about hers which she uses very successfully - you could ask her for ideas on how to make one yourself. daj198
Couldn't you genetically modify chickens to not be so loud?

daj198
where i come from they do really harmfull thing like cut out something from his neck or wherever so he can crow or bok Sounds horrific... I'd rather have noise. I quite like the cockerel crowing anyway.
Lesley
It might be easier to cut the vocal cords of your neighbours - and then they won't be able to complain and the poor cockerel could live in peace?
xChicken04x
I've often thought about why a none crowing cockerel hasn't been 'invented' yet . Do you think putting a bumpa bit on would work? I've never seen a bumpa bit in the 'flesh' before so I don't really know how they work . For those of you who have used a bumpa bit on a hen, would that work? Oh and just for the record, I'm not encouraging anyone to do nor am I planing to do this, I'm just curious to see whether a bumpa bit would work as I've never seen one in the flesh . xx

bronze
I've often thought about why a none crowing cockerel hasn't been 'invented' yet . xx Because the crow is part of the cockerels protection of his girls. Most people have them in larger free ranging flocks where he needs to be able to do his job properly.
Egluntyne
You are joking aren't you Syed? What you suggest is cruel and quite possibly would lay you open to prosecution. Don't keep a rooster if you are in an urban situation. Edited June 9, 2008 by Guest
Egg Lou
Please tell me this is another "joke" thread!
superjules
This thread reminds me of the practice of cutting dogs' vocal cords so they couldn't bark a few years ago when handbag dogs became the new must-have accessory . It's cruel - animals need to be able to express their natural behaviour in order to be content. Isn't that one of the biggest arguments against battery farming? redfrock
This thread reminds me of the practice of cutting dogs' vocal cords so they couldn't bark a few years ago when handbag dogs became the new must-have accessory . I didn't even realise such a barbaric practice existed. People never cease to amaze me. An animal is an animal, and you should expect it to behave in its natural way. The Dogmother
I've just posted this link in my Prudence thread, but it seems appropriate here too http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30200-1318502,00.html For goodness sakes, they are animals, not fashion accessories. A pair of shoes is a fashion accessory.
