Foster Mummys Just an Idea?

Recommended Posts

Hi I was having a think (dangerous I know) whilst digging perhaps we could have a foster mum group like chicken sitters! but for omleteers who find themselves poorly or a family situation that is not giving them the time to give there girls providing another option to having to re home!

I recently lost my Mum to C Diff she was in ITU for 36 days until she died I was with her 24/7 I was fortunate to have a worderful hubby and 4 grown up children and lots of good friends! however lots of people do not live close to there families for whatever reason and do not want to burden other family and friends any thoughts welcomed!!

Never think whilst digging....you could end up spearing your foot!

Nice idea, although it might take a bit of co-ordinating.

I would certainly be prepared to "foster" under those type of circumstances.

The transporting of the hens might be the stumbling block.

Thanks for the advice about spearing my foot However came too late I did exactly that last week OOUCH!!!!

It was just a thought especially given that the forum has lots of kind similarly minded people and the numbers are growing! before long every other home may have chickens YAH!!

I have no plans at moment to increase my girls but would be happy to foster if it helped someone out either meeting half way if a considerable distance or form a chicken chain (bit like a human chain ) to span distances? Lynn x

its a great idea and i have fostered cats before. i would certainly look after anybodys chooks if they were in need. it would not be a problem for alot of people moving an eglu with run but moving a cube for most people would be a pain. we have trucks here so it wouldnt stop me.

even though i have room in my cube, i couldnt just dump fostered chooks in with mine, it would cause all sorts of confusion. they would have to come with a home.

we could just have a list for each county of people that would be prepared to do it.

actually if it was posted on here when somebody needed help, i am sure we would find someone to do it.

I would do that, provided they came in a home with run so i could keep them separate form my girls. I'm home most of the day so they could take it in turns with my girls to free range around the garden. I think that's a great idea, i'd be happy to have hamsters etc too.

No tarantulas though :shock::lol:

Sounds like a fab idea - I also thought of maybe a "chicken helpline" so that if you went on hols and left chickens in care of neighbours etc that they could have the phone number of someone who knows about chooks just in case urgent advice was needed.

I'd very much like that when we go away in September (hint hint)

Pardon my ignorance I read Chicken sitters as omleteers taking care of your chooks whilst you were on holiday not for respite or for more lenghthy periods.

Lynn

I wasn't having a go Lynn :D - just wondering if my memory was letting me down yet again :? I couldn't remember if we still had that section  I think it's a brilliant idea :D

......and I think that that would be a good section to use for anyone asking for longer care or respite care?

We would be able to take chickens on a loger time scale than just holidays - perhaps something could be added to the section to say that people could ask for emergency care/help?

Do you want me to check with the other Moderators?

 Chicken sitters clearly offers the service of respite I simply misunderstood

having seen posts from omleteers looking for homes for there cooks when poorly or family crisis

I love Laura & CTB idea of a chicken helpline I bet this would be fantastic peace of mind to both the chicken familys and sitters. :)

I am a newbie myself so my knowledge to pass on to sitters would be extremely limited the thought that they could contact someone if need be is Fabulous :!:

I think the respite care is different to covering for holidays, depending on the requestors personal situation it may not be possible for them to say how long it would be for and may feel it's an imposition asking someone who has volunteered for holiday cover.

If someone is going through a difficult personal situation and just can't give their chickens the attention at the time it would be lovely to know they have an alternative to giving them up entirely.

Having rehomed three chickens for a omletter that had the opportunity for a sabbatical I would say that if they were to go back again their eglu or other chicken house would have to come too so that the little flocks could be kept separate. Also if the stay was to be prolonged those offering to 'foster' with younger children need to consider the impact on them being returned if their chidlren have got attached to the new chickens. It may be that a pro-longed stay should be split up between more more than one fosterer so no one gets too attached.

I agree that respite care is different to holiday care, but Chicken Sitters would be the place to ask.

If it was made obvious that it was respite care needed and not just cover for a holiday then only people who were able to provide longer term care would reply?

I think it would help young children to know that there are caring people around and that they were helping someone out of a difficult situation - as long as they know from the start........ :)

If I only had a few hens and needed some long term chicken sitters I wouldn't hesitate to ask in that section - I wouldn't dare ask anyone to care for the numbers we have now

.....but, if we had a separate section people wouldn't go in there either...... :?

You're probably right. I canimagine going in there more than I would go into CHicken SItters, as I'm assuming there wouldn't be that many posts and each of them would have some sense of urgency IYSWIM. B

But you're probably right.

I suppose in an emergency you could post in Nesting Box, just to say please look in chicken sitters, respite care needed. Then, people in a positon to help would go to the chicken sitters section and read the details.

If i ever definately want Omleteers to see something, i'll put it in nesting box, we all read that
