I am buying an Eglu, do I need these things?

Recommended Posts

I am buying an Eglu with chickens. As well as the Eglu in my basket I have these items,

Diatomaceous Earth - 100g £4.99 £4.99

Mixed Chicken Grit - 1.25kg £4.50 £4.50

Red Mite Powder - 500g £8.00 £8.00

Bokashi - Active £4.10 £4.10

Garlic Powder - 500g

Do I need these now? Do you need the diatomaceous earth and the red mite powder? Also could I find these products alot cheaper elsewhere?

How long does each item last on an Eglu with a couple of chickens?

Also is there anything else I should add?

Lots of newbie questions from me.

I thought chickens needed grit? Also I thought the house needed to be dusted with mite powders?

I know that the bokashi and garlic are extras but I thought I would be kind to the neighbours and try to keep the smell to a minimum. :)

Much as I love Omlet I wouldn't buy those things from them (they are pricey compared to other sites). You certainly don't need to rush into buying them straight away.

You could say all those things were necessary if you want to prevent beasties & smelly poo. Grit I would say is necessary, unless your hens are going to freerange a lot.

I made up a list of chicken websites for my Hen Party visitors. I haven't necessarily used all of them, but have saved them as and when I've come across them. It might give you somewhere to start (sorry there's so many of them, I didn't have time to pick the ones you might need  ).

I say-find your nearest animal supply store for horses, poultry, sheep, dogs etc and check their prices out.I pay £1.50 for a huge bag of grit and at that price i scatter it around the run for the chooks to scratch about to find.Everything else you've mentioned on your list is much cheaper there too.

I use diatom - it's great, but way expensive from the omlet shop. You can get it for about £25-£30 for a 5kg tub.

I've found Wigglys is the cheapest for bokashi, as abwsco says.

I'd say on that list, the grit and the diatom are the most important, other than that everything else is not really necessary. I've never used red mite powder as I think the diatom does a better job.

Great replys, thanks. I noticed that there is a horse supplies shop just down the road from me so I think I shall just order the main package from Omlet and see what they have to offer and the prices. I could always add anything I couldn't get hold of onto my order at a later date (I hope I am able to do this?)

I got a 25kg sack of mixed poultry grit form a local equestiran shop that also sells chickenny stuff.

It cost £2.50.

that is very cheap!, I got a small bag and it was £1.50! they are probably filling their own small bags and charging me more. I cant go and see if they have larger bags because thats where the hens are also sold..:roll:
