heinz on the offensive

Recommended Posts

I dont know if anyone knows about this but heinz have a new advert to promote deli mayonaisse. They have a guy serving the kids thier sandwich for the day and then another man comes in to collect his sandwich and gives him a kiss. Obviously this portrays a gay domestic scene. It was a peck on the lips!

200 people complained and now it has been withdrawn.

Please tell me this is as ridiculous as it seems. People were scared of thier children asking them about the men who kiss. If you cant explain it then what kind of parent are you???

I have two kids and i know a gay couple and they've kissed in front of my kids and no worries about explaining it. You dont have to go into full detail about every aspect of thier intimate lives.

I think people should grow up and stop worrying that being gay is infectious!!! Its not a freaking disease its as normal as a boy wanting to kiss a girl!!!

I hope this advert is aired again. Because if not then thier is little hope for the children who are being wrapped ion cotton wool and being told that everything outside of thier world is wrong. The world is immense and its full of rights and wrongs and things we will be wide eyed at but thats what makes it beautiful and diverse.

I couldn't agree more Maggie. We explained to DD about homosexuality at the first opportunity, but not as a separate sit-down conversation. It just cropped up in conversation, i think it was about Will Young, so we took the opportunity, she must have been all of 3 at the time. She sees nothing wrong with it at all, there is no 'normal' as far as she's concerned.

That advert sounds great, treating homosexuals the same as heterosexuals as far as advertising is concerned. Makes a change from the usual advert families with their two adorable children, wife stuck at home and hubby the provider

couldn't agree more with your sentiment - quite right..

but...

don't imagine Heinz are on a crusade here.

for them it is a well-worn path - create an advert that you KNOW idiots will complain about - get it pulled - create a stir - and bingo - your advert is discussed on forums far and wide - spread on youtube - and millions more people get to see and and hear it and discuss it.. if you're really lucky you'll sucker R5 into holding a prime-time phone in all about your advert..

free advertising - the way experts do it....

(not that I'm at all cynical!)

sorry to go off topic, but Phil, love the avatar. Batman the movie  we have it on DVD, can't beat it for a good laugh!

I agree that Heinz have probably done it on purpose, but wouldn't it be nice to ive in a world where images such as these were perfectly normal and no-one complained. Hang on, must go, a pig just flew past the window

Phil is right of course.

I was worried that it was withdrawn too - seems perfectly harmless to me *shrug*

My daughters are both well versed in the way it takes different people with different needs to fill the world. I never have & never would restict them from access to any minority group,be it sexual or otherwise. I am the sort of person who has a live & let live attitude, & I hope my girls are too.

My eldest is only 15 & already has a GBF 8)

Looked this up and amongst other things found it to be an abbreviation for 'Gravitational Biology Facility'.:lol:

So I'm guessing that GBF means Gay best friend??

Yes! :lol::lol::lol:

He is a sweetie - they go on shopping trips together & he picks her the most wonderful clothes out 8)

I wonder if we'll ever see the day where labels aren't applied like 'gay', 'straight', 'heterosexual' etc etc?

I remember an episode of Star Trek where Bev Crusher falls in love with a Trill. For those that aren't trekkies, a Trill is a being that has to reside in a host body and the 2 are sort of conjoined. Anyway, the host body dies and the trill has to be moved to another body and ultimately ends up in the body of a woman. Bev can't accept the new host. Despite being in love with what's inside, she can't get over the fact that who she loves is just in a different 'package'!

It was a brilliant metaphor, IMO, for being 'gay'. You fall in love with WHO a person is, not WHAT a person is. It doesn't matter about the packaging, it's what's inside that counts.

I agree - it's a bt of a shame that the ad has probably been done to be controversial as I don't believe it should be controversial. I have never found it difficult to explain to my children. When they first asked about people getting marrried (probably aged 3) and whether men could marry men etc I always explained yes but depended on the law in the country and that whilst it was more common for a man and a woman to fall in love often men fell in love with other men and women with other women. From that point on they have seen it as normal and unremarkable. As my eldest got to the later years in primary schools he asked more specifically what gay meant because it was being used as an insult and he was a bit confused as to why  I'm glad to say when I explained he was still bewildered as to why it was being used as an insult and annoyed that they thought it was.

I cannot understand why some people have a problem, particularly when it doesn't affect them in any way :? I think it's lovely things are more open now and you do see same sex partners wandering around holding hands but we still have a way to go

That isnt the point of the ad at all- The gimmick was that the mum of the house had been turned into a deli chef by using the product. Do people think that same-sex partners dress up like Mr Ben depending on the task they are doing in the home?

I have just watched the ad on Youtube as I had not actually seen it for myself and I agree that the point being made was that the Mum of the house had been turned into a deli chef by using the mayo.

The part that swayed it for me to think that it was not indicating a same sex relationship was that the children were calling the man 'Mum' which would not normally be the case in a homosexual relationship. There would usually be 'Dad' and 'John' or whatever-not Mum and Dad when both carers are male. :D

just found it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cXNzcxDrN4

rhapsody is right, it is supposed to be the mother but she has been turned into a deli chef. You know like in quantum leap when we still saw sam but everyone else saw whoever he was supposed to be?

we're seeing the deli chef but the family are still seeing the 'mother' it's quite amusing, "sweet cheeks"

p.s. I'd find it equally funny if it was a gruff, brash NY female deli person! It's the persona that had me laughing, rather than the play on sexuality!

Then again, the denouemont is the kiss isn't it? That's supposed to make you laugh, I did find it funny but not because I find 2 men kissing unnatural  I think it would be just as funny, as I say, with a brash NY woman.

It would be interesting to know if gay men find it offensive because it's maybe intended to poke fun at 2 men kissing?

I found it amusing, and a complete send up and as Seagazer says, a "quantum leap" thingy.

But by being pulled, whether Heinz knew it would be or not, the have got more advertising than if it had run.

I wonder if the products contain free range eggs.

That issue bothers me more than who is kissing whom.

Edited for typo.

Our kids call me Daddy and and my other half Dad :)

We get it mixed up more than they do. My 3 year old is always correcting me when I call myself Dad.

I didnt find it offensive. It didnt even occur to me that they were meant to be gay. I saw it and got the joke about the product turning the mum into a deli chef.

I actually find it more offensive that people took time out of their lives to actually complain about it.

Just watched the ad - it seems very inoffensive to me. As people have said it isn't even portraying a same sex couple as such so even people who would object to that haven't got anything to complain about. Don't these people have better things to do :?
