Lapinou
Stupid fool that I am, had a go at the mobile phone person who organised my upgrade last week for pressuring me to take the month's free insurance on my new phone because I knew I would forget to cancel it and would end up paying insurance when I didn't want to. I've just 'lost' my handbag, and had some lovely, kind honest person bring it to my door with a broken phone in it from it being run over by the cars behind mine when my handbag flew off the roof Now my brand new phone is broken and I can't replace it, and it's a further 18m until I get a new upgrade! Why, why, why didn't I take the free month??? But hurrah for the lovely honest people who brought my bag to me without nicking everything in it! Tiggy
there are some honest people out there
superjules
Oh dear. Sorry about your phone. I suppose it's now too late to take the insurance? Otherwise, is it something like the screen or the casing that can just be replaced or is it totally dead? It was nice of the person to return your bag, restores your faith in human nature, doesn't it.
The Dogmother
Check and see if yours is included in your contents insurance - I know that mine is. Bad news Clare, but stuff happens - at least all the other stuff is still there. Best change your locks though if the keys were in there. missuscluck
Oh dear thats bad news about your phone. Great you got your bag back though. I hate telephone sales people. They are the bane of my life at work. Im not surprised you turned down the insurance. I would have done the same. We had a huge battle last week with our landline provider over rolling over our contract with out asking. Apparently it is common practice. They dont have to ask you anymore It would appear when it comes to sales and contracts common courtesey and customer satisfaction no longer exist. However after a lot of wrangling we got our unwanted 3 year contract reduced to one
Egluntyne
At least you got your bag back.. That is a ray of sunshine in the world we live in today. Check your house contents insurance as Claret suggests. The phone might be covered.
Lapinou
Oh dear. Sorry about your phone. I suppose it's now too late to take the insurance? I think so - might be worth trying. Otherwise, is it something like the screen or the casing that can just be replaced or is it totally dead? It does turn on when I open it - the screen is cracked and I can't see anything exept a bit of light through the cracks. How can you get a screen repaired? It was nice of the person to return your bag, restores your faith in human nature, doesn't it. Yes - there was £50 in cash in there too, so I know they've not nicked a thing - they'd have had the cash before anything else! Check and see if yours is included in your contents insurance - I know that mine is. I think it probably costs less than the excess, but will check. I have my old phone so it's not a complete disaster, just very irritating to have wasted a lovely new phone! Best change your locks though if the keys were in there. I had my keys as I was driving - silly bint that I am! And I put it on my roof because I was being kind - trying to help another mum put her car seat in her car! I never put things on my roof for that very reason, but I couldn't open my car door with her car door open so I put it on the roof rather than on the ground - ground would have been more sensible in the end. Guest
be careful though as it might not cover you if you're out and about. If it doesn't you could say you drove over it in your driveway I got a pay as you go phone, Nokia, for a tenner in Asda but then I only use it for emergencies. If you use yours all the time, I s'pose that's no good to you? would your sim work in other phone?
superjules
If there's something going on when you switch it on, it might be worth taking it to a mobile shop to see if they can fix it.
Lapinou
yay! Dh just remembered we've got a free advantage gold account for 90 days because of just increasing our bank loan. Guess what advantage gold accounts come with...free mobile phone insurance I've just registered it, and in 21 days I'll be covered so will ring up then and say 'just ran over my phone!'. Fab, fab, fab! Better than waiting 18m and can use my old phone until then.
The Dogmother
Phew! At least you have a spare phone.
Helen&Lee
I was just about to say are you with Lloyds - if so you could be covered etc! Lucky you! Helen

Lesley
I make sure I put my bag on the bonnet if I need to put it down - I only drove off with it on the roof once.......I wondered why everyone was waving to me
Lapinou
Would have worked, only I couldn't get to the front of my car at all. I usually open the door and chuck it in as I'm so paranoid about leaving it on the top. I know what a wally I can be! Still, no desperate harm done, nothing lost, and now I know I can still have my nice new phone in a few weeks I'm happy - apart from being pretty irritated at myself
Yolky
What a total pain about the phone but I am glad that there are still honest people who bring back lost handbags. If I lost my bag it would be my filofax I would miss most I think.
The Dogmother
I once drove off leaving my sunglasses on the roof of the car - a total pain as I can't see in bright sunlight. Someone drove past my office the other week with a handbag on their roof.
Cooks
I am glad you got your handbag back, although a shame about your phone,
freddie
I drove off with a wine box on my roof!!(DONT ask ) It made a hell of a bang when it fell off and popped!! I was young and carefree.... and overseas!!
Olly
don't beat yourself up, it happened because you were trying to help someone else, after all! Hurrah for honest people who return handbags, and hurrah for your Gold cover insurance. It's easy with hindsight to say 'oh, I should have taken the insurance' but this has probably never happened to you before, and never will again - you made the right decision not to take on cover that you would be paying for for months. The Dogmother
From experience, I never take out those insurance offers - the get-out clauses are so convoluted that you can guarantee that they don't cover whatever is wrong with/happens to your item, and they are a devil to cancel too. Lapinou
And that money expert who is on all the tv progs says that mobile phone insurance is the main one it's not worth taking out - it's easy to find a spare mobile to use if necessary and, even if you did fork out for a new phone, you will have spent so much on the insurance over the years, you wouldn't have saved a penny! The Dogmother
I must admit to being a phone philistine and only wanting the most basic model that just makes calls. My old one eventually broke down earlier this year and I was entitled to a few snazzy ones on my contract... the young lad in the store was flabbergasted when I said that I 'just want one that makes calls'. I hardly use it, so anything else is wasted. I have a few old phones kicking around at home, so can use those if mine breaks. I really couldn't care what it looks like. Lapinou
I'm not really that bothered, it's just one of those things that is really annoying because I'd been stupid and then, when it could have all be sorted out, it wasn't because I'd refused the free insurance for the first month. And, intially, I'd thought that my passenger had chucked my bag out the window (a lovely woman but who I really feel has aspergers syndrome - something I'm used to from my step-brother!) as the people who returned it said it looked like it had been thrown out the window. I was just upset - already upset as I thought I'd left it behind, and then thought someone had chucked it out the window, and then that I'd got a brand new broken phone and had to go back to my old one that is seriously getting close to the end of it's life thanks to being manhandled by three young children! And that was when I posted initially! And then I calmed down, and DH remembered the insurance on the bank account and now I couldn't care less - kind of pleased I will get a new one so I know I don't need to worry about my old one packing up, but not distraught because I broke my new phone anymore
