Barkisland
Sorry to ask this, because I know it has been done before, but I've done a search and I can't find it. My cube is ordered, hubby is busy designing a nice walk in run, which he intends to build himself. I've been studying the forum diligently and I'm making a shopping list of things I'll need to buy. So far I have: Layers mash with Bokashi Mixed corn Grit Garlic Powder Galley pots DE powder Gentian violet spray Stalosan Some sort of bedding material - is shredded paper OK? I can get loads of that for nowt! Do I need all of these things? And have I missed something obvious or vital? Please help. I won't be getting my chooks until late September, so have plenty of time, but I'm gettin mighty eggcited
debbie26pet
wow what a list well done, i would suggest limestone and poultry spice, and a some kind of water container,
Barkisland
Thanks Debbie. I think a water container should be included with the cube? Any thoughts on bedding? Off to look up spice and limestone.....
Christian
You have a fab list there Barkisland. I wouldn't worry about limestone flour or poultry spice just yet. They are nice to haves, not essential just at the moment. Limestone flour is a calcium supplement if your chickens start laying soft shelled eggs. Poultry spice is a general tonic (in powder form) which is good if they are moulting or generally a bit low. Shredded paper if fine to use in the nest box, but can become pooey very quickly. I use aubiose in the droppings tray, nest box and run. Good stuff, as it dries out the poo quickly. Good luck with your new chickens. theherd123
A camera! You need a camera so we can look at photos of your chooks when they arrive.
Steph101
Red mite powder, citricidal (handy for sneezing chooks), Poultry Booster, Apple cider vinegar.
Steph101
...and garden shoes!
Janty
If you areintending to feed your girls with layers mash mixed with bokashi, then you don't necessarily need to buy the garlic powder. If you are buying the garlic powder to neutralise the poos, the bokashi will do this for you.
Barkisland
Thanks for the tips everybody I have wellies, appropriately sited garden seat and camera! Pics will be posted, don't worry. I will cross off the garlic then, as I am very keen on the Bok-mashi idea. Re red mite powder, I thought this wouldn't be a problem in a cube, being plastic? What is the cider vinegar used for again? - there's so much to learn.
Steph101
The Red Mite Powder smells nice; tea tree and lavender. They are a lot less likely to get mite problems in an eglu or cube, but it's nice to sprinke some in the sleeping area and dust bath for extra hygiene. Apple cider vinegar - just put a splash in their drinking water, keeps their feathers shiny, and it's good for their intestinal flora, and helps keep internal parasites a bay. Barkisland
So would I be needing both Citriciadal and Cider vinegar?? And red mite powder and Stalosan?? Also, is Verm X the best thing for worming ( *shudders at thought*)
theherd123
Flubenvet is the wormer of choice for most users of this forum. Dont worry you just add a little to their food
Barkisland
Also, the DE powder seems to be very multi purpose so do I really need the red mite powder and Stalosan as well??? (This is doin my head in!) Thanks for all the input. It seems everyone has their fave products, I suppose I'll develop my own in due course. Thanks for worming advice Emma. (I hate worms!) Hubby has just won a mitre saw on Ebay - the first step in his master plan!
Stevie
I personally only use DE as its multi function. You can add it to a dust bath so i just give a few squirts in their chosen spots under shrubs and they work it into their feathers themselves.I also add it to their food too! I do also add Citricidal to their drinking water...and also my dogs for good measure!
Yolky
Something to clean up the poo. I recommend a rake and a cat litter scooper. If you are having a fixed run I totally recommend hemcore, I have only been using it a day and I am totally wowed by it. My run will smell fresh now for so much longer. Stevie
There is possibly something else you might want or need.Everytime i clean the Eglu-i squirt a little Citronella oil in the droppings tray to discourage flies and make it smell a lot better.
