Guest
I just have to rant about sizes - how does ANYONE shop online when sizes vary so much??? I do buy off Ebay but I have to stick to brands that I know exactly where the fit lies. I'm a 10/12. Pretty much a 10 on the bottom and a 12 on top, so 12's for tops jackets & dresses and 10 for trousers and skirts - especially if they have waists as I have a small waist (even when I was a 28 my waist was out of proportion with the rest of me). Yesterday I was wearing some size 8 next trousers - I think they are meant to be baggier at the top than they are on me, they were one of my charity shop bargains. Today I was in the Karen Millen shop for the end of sale bargains. I have a KM top that I bought YONKS ago in a charity shop and it's a 12, and it fitted me before I was a 12 too. But the dress I bought today has a tight bodice and wasn't even close to doing up in a 12 but a 14 is a perfect fit. The bargain dress I bought in Principles a couple of weeks ago, which also has a tight bodice is a 10. The draped top type dress I just got off Ebay is a 12 That pretty much describes my wardrobe at the moment - all different sizes but they all fit - is sizing going a little haywire nowdays? Are manufacturers trying to convince us we are bigger/smaller than we really are? Are they in cahoots with the food labellers???
ubereglu
I agree with you-Topshop sizing is about a size bigger than everywhere else. New Look sizing is about average, but tops are smaller than they should be. Dorothy Perkins sizing is plain weird-Yesterday I bought a pair of black shorts in a size 10 and a skirt in size 12, but the jeans I have from there are a size 8... Hey well, it's why I insist on trying before buying.
Guest
Don ;t get me started on clothes sizing. I bought a pair of cropped jeans from McKays the other day, didn't have the time or patience to try them on (grumpy baby, whiny 5 year old and 2 starving pre-teens tagging along ), so bought a size up from my usual size, knowing that McKays sizes can be a bit bizarre. Got them home, tried them on, and while the hips and thighs are positively clown-like with their bagginess, the waist is about an inch too small.... Tessa the Duchess
I couldn't agree more Pengy. I am a size 10/12 too. I have about 10 shirts from Gap, Next and Per Uno all charity job bargains. They are all size 12. Some of them fit perfectly, some are on the large size and one I only wear when I'm feeling really thin The sizing thing is a puzzle to me Tessa
hillfamily
I have 3 pairs of jeans - all exactly the same style and size (just different colours) and each pair is a different fit I find each shop's sizes are different and quite often within a shop their sizes differ between design. A friend works for M&S and apparently when the fabric is cut it can be different by up to an inch explaining why the same design and size can vary between each pair
jlo
That may go some way to explaining why I am a 12 in Per Una and a 14 in the rest of M & S clothes. I agree that some of it is down to manufacturers trying to make us believe that we are smaller than we really are. I am normally a size 12 in Next but the other day I had to buy a 12 skirt and a 16 jacket! All very frustrating!
Lesley
I've just found out the hard way about buying off Ebay Some of the clothes fitted, some drowned me and some were only suitable to fit my 10 year old granddaughter - yet all had the same size label in them
Guest
I just go with taking the chance on Ebay, if it doesn't fit then I can re-sell them. The charity shops are a much better bet though - fitting rooms and generally cheaper than Ebay. A couple of days ago I paid £3.75 for a pair of jeans that were in the sale at the boutique up the road for £60!
cathybc
I think sizes are getting bigger (sadly so am I, and more quickly than the sizing is...) I had some size 12 skirts from next that I wore to work years ago. I kept them when I 'grew out' of them as they are classic styles. Some time ago I lost weight and could wear size 10 next skirts; I got the old ones out and could no way get them on, even tho the styles are similiar and they were a size bigger - but I am talking about 15 years old so i guess they have resized them gradually. I love DP for clothes, good value and fit my shape....
Janty
I am anything from a 16 to a 20 in tops depending where I buy them from. M&S is generally a 16 whereas Next can be 18 or 20. In skirts/ trousers I am generally a 14 but in M&S I am a 12. It is mad.
Shirl
I think Next are definitely out to flatter. I'm a 10/12 and in Next always a 10. Before I had my youngest I wore size 8 next but there's no way I was really a size 8. I have a gorgeous linen suit that is about 15 years old and a size 8 and I reckon it would be a 4 or posssibly 6 by todays standards. I should just get rid of it but it shows me that it isn't a figment of my imagination that I used to be that slim I've bought a couple of bits off Ebay and online but I never sell/return them when they don't fit and they end up at a charity shop. Yes it's me that sends the clothes there still with the tags on.
Janty
Now I always have the opposite problem with Next. I have big boobs and always need a size or two bigger in Next clothing.
Shirl
Well that'll be the difference then. You can call me no boobs Shirl
