Joojoo
You sound like me. I've just managed to grow mine for the first time at 38 having stopped nibbling them while we were in Egypt a couple of months ago - the fear of dysentry does wonders for them . I got in a right mess the first couple of times I tried to do my right hand, but I found the if you get a cotton wool bud or a tooth pick with nail varnish remover on it, you can wipe off any bits that shouldn't be there pretty quick before it dries. Also, I noticed that when a manicurist does it, they don't cover the entire nail so try to do it in say 3 swipes across each nail that aren't too close to the skin at the sides. Hope this helps (like I'm an expert)
Angels4
Practice does make perfect...When putting the varnish on your nail do it in three swipes. First swipe down the middle, second swipe over lapping the first swipe to one side, third swipe again over lapping the first swipe but on the opposite side. You should redip the brush between swipes to make sure it is loaded with varnish. Then just clean up any left on your skin with a tooth pick dipped in remover just like Joojoo suggested. Angels4
The power of observation Joojoo Also, forgot to mention...each swipe of the brush should be as smooth as possible from cuticle to tip.
Egluntyne
Don't overload the brush, and tidy your cuticles up before applying varnish.
redfrock
do them the night before and then in the morning at the end of your hot shower the bits of nail varnish on your skin will be soft and just s"Ooops, word censored!"e off (scummy aren't I!!) Alternatively ask my husband to do it. He is fab! When my hair is long he straightens it, and he also paints my toe and finger nails beautifully - not bad for a 6ft 3" built-like-the-proverbial tattooed mechanic! WitchHazel
you are right handed, so it is important that you you paint your right hand first (start with the one that is most difficult), wait for it to dry, and then do the left hand. Dip the brush, as you pull it out of the pot slide the side of the brush you aren't going to be using against the edge, so you only have nail bvarnish on one side of the brush - the side you are going to use The tip about painting the nails the night before, then washing the bits that end up on your skin off in the shower the next day, works really well. And you could always have a look at the "How to Apply Nail Polish" video on the ever helpful VideoJug http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-apply-nail-polish
Paola
I always find that it helps a lot if you use a good quality nail polish. It took 30 years for me to give up biting my nails I use Nails Inc polish I found that the children's £1 stuff does not go on so well
craftyhunnypie
Hi - I can fully recommend a nail polish from Bourjois. It's called 1 Seconde nail varnish..even though it takes 50 seconds to dry. I love it because it has a large fanned brush, much easier to put the colour on with. Even on the awkward hand. Two stokes on each nail & done! I have colour number 13 and it's lovely - a nice sparkly pink. But they do a nice coral colour too. Emma.x
Seagazer
I'm not very good with the nail varnish either and tend to do it at night so I can wash off the extra!!
cathybc
rest your left hand on something (eg table) to help prevent wobbles. x
WitchHazel
WAHAAAAY! . Just painted my nails .. they look lovely . Not entirely sure why, but WitchHazel, I followed your advice, painted my right hand first, and they turned out pretty good! I know, it's bizarre isn't it?! redfrock
sorry to bringthis topic back but thought you might be interested to know that Bourjois have brought out a new nail varnish with a 'fan effect' brush. It is normally £5.50 but is on offer in Superdrug at the moment for £4. I bought some on Thursday and have just used it for the first time and it has been an absolute breeze to use. So much easier than the traditional style brush. Not a messy finger in sight - even on my right hand! Very impressed Not sure about the colour I chose though . Guess I had better nip back in tomorrow and buy another one

Snowy
How are your nails doing Laura? Hope they still look nice! I had a girly moment the other week and in a fit of rebellion against all the testosterone in the house, I painted my nails (turquoise , I don't do pink nails ) They looked lovely for 2 days, then I took the boys swimming - the whole lot peeled off! I've never had that before! Is that a common problem with pools and nail polish or was it my dodgy avon nail polish? And now my nails have all snapped off anyway I give up
Paola
Never had any problems with my Nails inc polish It might be worth trying another brand.
Cinnamon
Nails Inc is really good stuff, as is OPI & Jessica. I bought the most fab crystal nail file at a craft fair at the weekend. OK, it was a little bit more than an emery board, but its so pretty & does a really, really good job. You can see them here www.wowtrade.co.uk I got the pink one
