Tina C
Does anyone have any ideas on what to do if you throw a glass of wine over a laptop - straight into the keyboard (and if anyone is wondering I did not just do this - see time of post). OH has dismantled to dry out but what else should we do? (I was mortified - I am the one who always moans about people eating and drinking near the PCs...) jess
Not alot you can do really, just leave it for the longest time to dry out possible, liquid won't damage the keyboard but a mix of liquid and electronics will. Someone recently watered my laptop keyboard and I had to get it replaced :C it was only about fifty quid though so not that bad.
Cinnamon
I think you can help it to dry by using a hairdryer on a low setting on it
Clur
Try putting it in an airing cupboard to dry - we had to do this with a mobile phone that went through the wash, and it worked
Lewis
Mom put my phone in the washing machine aswell! Don't turn it on for a few days, don't try putting it on the radiator or with a hair dryer for the first day because apparently the liquid evaporates too quickly and leaves crystals, and in mobiles they stay inside and cloud up the screen. Google it and see what you find
Tessa the Duchess
Hate to be a doom and gloom merchant but in my experience liquids which have a sugar content don't seem to dry out ever. I tipped a cup of tea, no sugar, over a key board and it dried out in a few days. I also managed to tip a glass of orange juice over another keyboard and it never recovered Also my mobile phone got Guinness tipped over it on a pub table and that died a death I now have very strict rules about no liquids anywhere near my precious laptop I hope yours does recover though Tessa
Geoid
Dismantle it, get some cotton wool and some water and wipe the insides of your laptop with it, not loads of water, just a bit. This should get rid of any residue. Then leave it in the airing cupboard for a few days. Disclaimer: I cannot be held responsible for any damage caused by following my advice. Scramble
I did the same thing quite a while ago! My dad can't stay away from his computer So he took his laptop on our family holiday... um, well, lets see: him reading the news on the bbc website my, mum cooking dinner, and me trying to show my father the new drawing that I'd just finished = me getting a little over enthusastic and accidentally knocking his glass of wine over the keys. But, he just got mad, turned it off, wiped it up with a dishcloth, turned it back on, went back on the bbc, and resulted to ignoring me for an hour Even though I said sorry about one million times and asked if it was okay. He isn't mad anymore ( though I doubt he can even remember) But it was fine... Odd, but a highly amusing experience. On my behalf anyway. ajm200
My LO piddled on the kitchen floor a few days ago then gave Daddy's mobile a bath in the puddle. Two days later, the phone had dried out and was usable again. Not too sure about the hygiene implications. When I worked for an IT company we would tell customers that any computers that got wet were no longer supported but in reality, you'd get away with it most of the time. The only issue comes if the liquid causes a short and burns something out or if the residue causes short circuits or insulates where it shouldn't. Make sure it is completely dry, then give it a go. If it starts having odd faults from time to time at least you know the cause
Tina C
Thanks - we have been given the same advice by other IT people who said more damage can be done with it turned on wet so wait until it completely dries out, which is I guess because of the shorting thing. So we have just left it alone, particaly dismantled, since last Saturday (but have not put it in the airing cupboard). Anyone know how long it will be before a fairly large glass of wine will have dried out from a laptop? (Proabably a bit longer than a little one's piddle )
ajm200
I'd give it at least a week if you can manage without it that long.
