dancing cloud
Despite my selfish best efforts at a rain dance , the day is so far dry and bright so the annual carnival firework display will be happening tonight about 100 yards from my home (as the hen sort of flies). When we had thunderstorms last week it clearly bothered them, as I had a couple of softie eggs and Joy only laid her first proper egg yesterday, so I would like to minimise distress as far as possible. They will have gone to bed by the start of the display and there is a tarp over the Cube to reduce light - is there anything else I can do? Fat Puddy always disappears to her "safe place" under the spare bed, but I don't think she'll be willing to share with the chooks Edited August 15, 2008 by Guest
Ain't Nobody Here
I suppose you could bring them into the house in a cardboard box . Don't know if that would help much though.
skye
They might not be bothered by the fireworks. Our chickens were fine on Bonner Night - we were more nervous than they were! We went up to see them a couple of times and they were snoring peacefully throughout even though it was very noisy with plenty of sudden bangs. Egluntyne
Mine didn't bat an eyelid when our inconsiderate neighbour regularly let fireworks off at all hours over the last few years. He won't be letting them off where he is now.

Mrs Frugal
We used to bring our girls in on Bonfire Night but after running out to check on them and finding them all happily asleep during a neighbour's impromptu firework display, I've left them to it every year since! They don't seem to mind too much.

Egluntyne
:D It wasn't a firework that he let off on the occassion that got him into trouble. Sorry to have derailed your thread dancingcloud.
dancing cloud
That's OK Egluntine - I'm grateful you clarified what happened to the neighbour (I was wondering ...), and I bet you're grateful HMP are now accommodating him I'm going to leave early tonight to let my scoffalots have a good long play out before bed-time, in the hope they might sleep through it all. If it's softie eggs again, it won't matter, but they've only known freedom for not-quite three months and I don't want anything upsetting them unnecessarily. My rain-dance produced the first rain-free day this week - that'll teach me I know from previous years that Fat Puddy will come and curl up on my bed for comfort once it's all over, but that's no place for six hens Thanks for the reassurance from everybody - I do so worry about my little girls! dancing cloud
Many thanks to everyone for all the reassurance - the chooks didn't make a sound, even when the ground shook , and the three eggs laid before I came out this morning were all as normal - phew!! Fat Puddy didn't come out from her safe place for over four hours, whereas Loki stayed out for the whole thing (probably watching the display and workng the crowd for hot-dogs ) Over-anxious hen-mummy now looking forward to the weekend and the rather nice sauvignon blanc chilling in the fridge Thanks again - I love this forum
jlo
Egluntine, from the length of time your neighbour got, I am guessing that letting off fireworks was probably the least of your problems!
