Not prepared to eat eggs from own hens?

Recommended Posts

I've sold my Mk1 to a pal (cute story, will post it later) pending the arrival of my cube.

my pal's OH has said there is NO WAY he is going to eat the eggs. He loves eggs but says he just can't stomach the idea of eating something that just popped out of his pet's bum.

:lol::lol::roll::lol::lol:

She asked where did he think the eggs in the shop came from? he said "I know, I know, don't make me think about it. I need to pretend they come from special clean egg factories"

I reckon it will last about 2 days of proper eggs before he caves. Max.

Now I actually have some sympathy on this one.

First tiny egg we ever had, I cooked and ate, but it felt really weird and I don't know why. I wondered if it was going to be a problem. Next hurdle was "orange eggs"....... I scrambled some and they were bright orange having been previously used to the anemic shop eggs I found this a bit weird too.

Pleased to say it only lasted a few days but not ashamed to admit I've been there.

On another matter - My sister has my eggs regularily for her toddler, soft boiled. She ran out and bought shop free range extra large and remarked that the yolks were tiny and you could hardly dip the "soldiers" in them as they were mostly "white" and tasted different......

Wow, quite a few people seem to feel unable to eat the eggs - i am really  !

For us it has been the other way around. Kids unprepared to eat eggs have got all keen since we got the hens. Several of my friends' non-egg-eating kids will always eat them here because they can fetch the eggs themselves. Or, if not, they choose whose egg they want ("I want Ruby's egg today...") and then go and thank the chook after their meal. It is very sweet.

My son would never eat eggs when he was younger he said they smelt horrible and didnt taste nice.

Since I got the girls he regularly eats them as he said they taste a lot nicer than shop ones.

When he decided to taste one I havent a clue :o

I was sending them home to my DIL as she loves eggs so maybe that was when he decided to try them.

FIL is also a fan of them and has a regular supply.

Hen watch mentioned the orange eggs which reminded me of when my DIL made a sponge cake and rang to ask if it was ok that it was orange

I think the orange effect is lovely on dippy eggs.

Best wishes

Since my last post my OH has managed to make a savoury pancake with our hens eggs and eat it!

At the rist of putting others off - here is his reason for squeamishness about eating eggs from those he knows: a comment on "Red Dwarf" which referred to eggs as "fried chicken ovulations"! - Apologies to all those who now also feel squeamish!

Electricbarbarella - well done on going veggie - if you have any worries about nutrition, etc, look up the Vegetarian Society - they stood me in good stead when starting out veggie many moons ago.

My daughter was exactly the same  When our girls were first laying and DS found a warm egg in the Eglu he took it into her held it out and said "feel that it's still warm" at which she screamed "Go away you're sick, that's just come out of a chickens bum"

I pointed out that all eggs came from the same place and she said "Yes, but I don't have to see their bums" ( she's 22 years old and claimed that having our own chickens had put her off eggs)

After a couple of weeks resistance she finally started eating them, conceded that they were the tastiest, freshest eggs she's ever had and now tells all and sundry to the extent that most of her friends are asking for them :D

Well I am already veggie and have been for 25yrs!!!!!! I do eat eggs though occasionally.

My OH has been 'avoiding' chicken since the girls came... I secretly think his body is veggie but his brain hasn't caught up as he's body 'hates' meat!!!

Well done electricbarbarella!! Let me know if you need any help!

Amazing reading . . . . in our house the children are fussy with eggs. Not because they don't like them, quite the opposite, they want 'Daisy cakes', 'Hermione omlette', 'Darcy scrambled' . . . and what a fuss if there aren't enough of one hens eggs!!!!!!!!! My five yr old has shed many a tear over her hen not laying enough just for her, she takes it personally!!!

I'm the opposite too I actually have a waiting list for my 6 girls eggs!!! I have to rotate who has them and tick them off the list and put them back at the bottom, we all eat our girls eggs they are fantastic and I have'nt bought a shop egg for 6 months....and out of all the months we have been getting them, I have dropped one and was mortified...people do keep asking if we still have 6 girls tho....I flatly refuse to eat my girls....lol they are my pride and joy!!

It's so weird to read all that, our first two eggs are still sat in the fridge untouched.

I have told myself that I haven't eaten them yet because I am saving them, but that makes no sense! I think I will eat them this evening with soilders just to test what you all say about the bigger yolks.

By the way, have only had my girls for 3 days but at the supermarket today could only bring myself to buy free range chicken to eat, and then I put that back.

We had our first egg yesterday, which I persuaded my four year old we couldn't cook until his Daddy had seen it, then our second today, both little 40g ones, both eaten by our boy for dinner. Hubby said it barely touched the sides :lol: There's going to be fights over who gets to eat them I reckon (same happened with the raspberries and strawberries!!) better hope the other two start laying soon or there's going to be trouble :pray:
