Egluntyne
1. Washable Cleansing pads. I sussed this one out years ago and bought 6 bog standard white 100% cotton flannels for about £3 and use a clean one daily. I then just bung it in with the washing. 2. Bokashi kitchen waste composter. Absolutely marvellous. Got mine from Wiggly Wigglers, 2 for about £55 or so. You need 2 as when the first one is full, you have to leave it to fester for 10 days. In the meantime, you get the second one going. **Top tip** Dont forget to empty the litte tap thingy at the bottom, or you may find sinister looking bin juice has leaked all over your floor. It is harmless though. Very good for keeping drains smelling lovely. Also you can use the bokashi bran to keep the Eglu smelling nice, and it speeds up composting when you put the chicken poo in your compost bin. Bye for now. Egluntine. Happymama
All Waste Composter Kit Note, peeps, that this link won't work properly in Mozilla, you need IE to get the formatting right on the webpage. Good idea, but my dogs/cats eat our left over cooked food, so between them, the hens, the wormery and the compost heap, we're ok.
Merryn
I've had the Bokashi bins (2 of them as when one is full and has to wait for 2 weeks before emptying, the other can be started) for some months now and they are BRILLIANT. I got my from Wiggly Wigglers like Egluntineclick here. I gave up on my wormery as twice the little blighters died on me - either too hot or too cold and there was never much compost each time for our large garden AND you had to remember not to put citrus fruit and onions etc in it AND STILL the fruit flies came out in droves even with the lime mix...I gave the wormery away through our local freecycle group. Now I can compost anything and everything in the bokashi bin and the juice is a fantastic feed for the plants at this time of year and keeps the drains clean for the rest. Merryn
The good news is that it will take bones as well as cooked and uncooked food including meat! Kate, my instructions from Wiggly Wigglers is that the bin takes cooked and uncooked meat s"Ooops, word censored!"s and fish but NO BONES. I really don't think that the "pickling" action of the bokashi will break down the bones at all and then you are putting them, still whole, on the compost. So beware! Mrs Frugal
Oh dear! That's really confusing because mine says I can put bones in - it's from The Natural Collection - but we've just emptied it for the first time and it looks almost the same as it went in which is a tad worrying! Might leave bones out in future! We don't have that many anyway which is good!! The leftovers in the composter had fermented considerably and are now dug into the compost heap. I do hope we don't attract rats! I hate rats!
Merryn
I hate rats too!! We have had one burrowing through our compost. I got the rat man and I think he's dealt with it - touch wood!
Eyren
I gave up on my wormery as twice the little blighters died on me - either too hot or too cold and there was never much compost each time for our large garden AND you had to remember not to put citrus fruit and onions etc in it AND STILL the fruit flies came out in droves even with the lime mix...I gave the wormery away through our local freecycle group. I'm glad it's not just me - I've spent a fortune on replacement worms and never managed to get them to make a useful quantity of compost I think I'll clean it out at the end of the summer, feed the worms to the chooks and sell it through the campus for-sale list! The Dogmother
Mine was going great guns and there is loads of compost on the bottom layer, but the worms refuse to move up to the next layer and I find loads of them in the sump. I have emailed WigglyWigglers about it
kannie
We got to a stage with ours when the worms started to try and evacuate it. Then it turned really smelly, so they were probably doing the right thing! It was an awful, gut-churning, vomit-inducing, nightmare to get rid of it! The Dogmother
Oh yuk! Perhaps I ought to have heeded Graham's warning about wormeries
Merryn
I find loads of them in the sump. Mine kept going down to the sump as well.
Sheilaz
We got to a stage with ours when the worms started to try and evacuate it. Then it turned really smelly, so they were probably doing the right thing! It was an awful, gut-churning, vomit-inducing, nightmare to get rid of it! I thought I'd clicked onto the hairwashing topic! Now, I've realised, it's really useful sharing the findings here, isn't it? Comparing notes on wormeries, how often do we get the chance to do that elsewhere? The Dogmother
I checked mine again alst night - and there were wormies in the top layer and NONE in the sump. It is a lot better since I put a dustbin lid on the top instead of the raincover, which seemed to leak. I think they were beign washed down to the sump by the rain. Merryn
Be careful, Clare, that they've got enough air with the dustbin lid on. I killed mine one time by this method - Wiggly Wigglers said I'd suffocated them You can get a rain cover, which will let in the air, to fit over the lid. The Dogmother
Thanks for the tip Merryn - I have got the rain cover, but it's this that leaks and lets all the rain in! The dustbin lid is quite a loose fit, but on your advuce, I might try raising it up a bit to increase the airflow.

Merryn
Cinnamon, I got rid of mine through my local free-cycle group. I had dozens of requests within ½hr of me advertising on the site.See hereto find your local group. It's a very good scheme unless you are wanting some money for it!
