Ginge40
Hi to you all, I have purchased a second hand Eglu and can't to get my new hens. Can anyone recommend reputable breeders in the Kent area, and which breeds are friendly and good layers. Thanks for your help
Reikiranf
Well done for getting an Eglu, you won't be disappointed I got my girls with the Eglu from Omlet so I don't have any experience of breeders or different breeds of chickens, if you search the forum other Omleteers have many different types of chickens, so you could pick up some advice there, but it could be worth giving omlet a call if they are delivering near you they might sell you some hens. If you get a copy of Practical poultry magazine, they have lists of breeders failing those suggestions there's a place near Orpington called Home Farm Fowls run by Colin and Fee and they are really lovely, helpful people, they are hoping to move soon so may not have any hens for sale but I'm sure that they'll point you in the right direction with plenty of good advice if they are unable to help you. Ginge40
Thanks for all your help. Will be buying Practical Poultry in the morning and will also contact Colin to see if he can help. Will also check out the forum for friendly breeds!
redfrock
depends where you are but you really can't go wrong with Ben from Hen House Poultry http://www.henhousepoultry.co.uk He is based in Teston, just outside Maidstone, and what he doesn't know about chickens really isn't worth knowing. He is also a lovely person.

Ginge40
Shall I get 2 or 3? What do you experts think?!
Seagazer
Opinion always goes to 3 - in case anything happens to one of them then you don't get left with a lonely hen. Good luck

A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Totally backing the going to Ben at Henhouse Poultry, Teston nr Maidstone plan. I got mine from him. All healthy, beautiful and friendly birds. They say the Mendlesham ambers and rangers are the friendliest and most docile, but my Mendlesham Blue and Fenning Cou Cou are great, as is my Fenning Sussex. My Fenning Black is still very shy but it's only just over a week. Go for the ones you fall in love with. Personality is down to individual chicken rather than breed I reckon. As for the person looking for a Sussex - he does Sussex hybrids which are great. But not pure Light Sussexs. But he is involved with some Kent Poultry association so may be able to point you to a pure Sussex person if that's what you're looking for. Ginge40
Don't tempt me!! Three is my final number (i think!!) Like the look of the Mendlesham Amber and as I'm a bit of ginge myself it's got to be the Ranger as well
Ginge40
Hi chickychicky chick....enn (great name!) Your hens look great, I like the look of the Amber but think I may take your advice and wait to see who I fall in love with (just hope it ain't too many!) A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Cool! I had a different plan in my head from what I came out with because I fell for different chickens. His blues are so pretty and mine is the friendliest bird. A 'pretty' one as well as a practical one will do you well. Ben has a big walk-in space full of buyable chooks. You pick them and he chases them round and catches them for you. A bit like catching goldfish in a pet shop only funnier and featherier. Ginge40
Love the names of your hens and can't wait for Sunday. quickcluck
I love all of mine, but the pied suffolk, fenning black and the blue are stunning
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
You're welcome. Between Ben and this forum, I feel very supported and happy in my first steps in chicken-rearing. It is like Christmas isn't it? I still feel like it's Christmas. It's soooo exciting. And slightly unreal. And really brilliant. Although I'm not thinking about turkey though because it's too close and a bit wrong now! Anna x
