Leicester_H
Hi Whilst on holiday we got to talking about chicken names. I was thinking of creating a Wiki entry of names of chickens that people have and another of names that would be good to have. Just thought it would be fun - and would avoid duplication. Would people contribute ? What section should it be under ? H
AnnieP
What a good idea Hazel! We could always just start it here and move it at soem stage when we think of somewhere better fro it to go? I'll start off then. My original girls had a TV programme theme (Miami Vice) so they were Crockett, Tubbs and Izzy. My battery girls are from my favourite book (Pride and Prejudice), so Mrs Bennet, Jane, Lizzy, Mary, Lydia and Kitty
little chickadee
Gosh this is going to get full very quickly but I don't know who would volunteer to organise it all (not me!) Mine are Dave (because my husband thought it was funny to say "alright Dave" everytime he goes out to the chickens) Amber (because she is a Bovans Amber/Amber Star) Buck Buck Barrrr (because my son named her for obvious reasons) & Seraphina (RIP) because of Seraphine Pekkala (or however you spell it) from The Dark Materials trilogy We are due to get three more soon and names flying around are Egluntina, Arietty & Pod (from the borrowers because my son loves the borrowers at the moment) and I think my daughter has a lot of girly ideas! Leicester_H
Hi The idea of using the WIKI is that individuals would add their new names in alphabetical order - so admin would be minimal If name is already on list, owners could simply put "+1" next to it. Egluntyne
Brilliant idea. Anybody mind if I set it up now whilst having a spot of lunch? I'll do an alphabetical list and a place for themes too. Please say if this is not what you had in mind. **It is set up in the Wiki for anyone who wants to add their chickens name. Leicester_H
Hi If its not easy/obvious don't worry - just do 2 lists. [edit] Perhaps people could add 'wish list' names in brackets to distinguish them - then only need one list PS - just seen it in the WIKI - that was quick - THANKS H
Angels4
My four are after one of my favorite films "Steel Magnolias". I'm a hairdresser and work with alot of women (not to be sexist) most hairdressers are women who like to hang out and "natter" and that is my view of my girls as they stand around and bok, bok, bok. Clairee M'Lynn Ouiser Truvy My next two will be: Veruca Violet for "Willy Wonka" and after that I want: Sophia Dorothy Blance Rose for the "Golden Girls"
Guest
mine are all named after characters in Tennyson poems (except for Bea who already had a name when we got her) If we get another 3, I think I'll probably name them after characters in Beatles songs; Prudence, Eleanor and Martha perhaps? bronze
Mine are after relations. Everytime I get some new girls I have to go back another generation.
Mrs Frugal
My original girls were named after the TV cooks The Two Fat Ladies - Jennifer and Clarissa and were joined a year later by Isabella (Izzy) after Isabella Beeton, another famous female cook. The Sussex Girls are Greek Godesses - Aphrodite, Athene, Cassandra and Pandora Coffee turned up on our doorstep and soon became the Ginger Chicken of Fate so we took the initials C.O.F and came up with Coffee. Omletina Kyckling
My girls all have Swedish names, of course - I went through my Swedish diary and wrote down names from each day which I liked the look of (in Sweden, each day of the year has a male and female name set against them, so you can celebrate both your birthday and also your name day, so you'd have all the Fridas celebrating on the same day - my birthday has the names of Odd and Folke against it, which hubby thinks is very funny) On my girls' name days they get extra treats (and we also raise the Swedish flag on the cube, yes really I think people around here think I'm a bit Odd) My girls are Britta, Freya, Helga, Jenny (pronounced Yenny as the Swedes pronounce Js as Ys), Matilda and Nina. My cats are Ludwig and Håkan and we celebrate their name days too!!
Aga n Chickens
Hello The largest Chicken (pepperpot) was going to be called Charlotte, but was soon renamed Wattles because she is the only one with them. Rene (pepperpot) was named after an Aunt who passed away and left me an amount of money, some of which I used to buy my Red Cube (as she was an animal lover and I thought that she would approve). Sacco and Vansetti (gingernuts) were named by my OH after a Woodie Guthrie song he'd heard Christie Moore sing at one of his concerts. Janty
I named my original girls after the Spice girls...Sporty, Scary, Posh, Baby & Ginger. We recently lost Ginger and Posh and Baby turned out to be Spice Boys! We also have famous chefs...Delia & Mrs. Beeton. We did have Fanny & Nigella but they passed away. We gave the ex-batts a Christmassy theme as we rescued them on 28th December...Tinsel, Bauble, Mistletoe, Ivy & Holly. I even knitted them little red and white jumpers with their initials on. I know, sad old bag that I am. Sadly, we no longer have either Bauble or Ivy. Our latest girls have 80s pop star names...Shaka Khan, Toyah, Sonia & Blondie. my son's Rhode Island reds are named after Liverpool players...Gerrard and Torres which is really confusing as everybody then calls them 'hes' instead of 'shes'. Cate in NZ
I don't have chickens any more , we had to rehome them because they couldn't have emigrated with us, and I'm waiting until we can buy a property with some land before embarking on chicken keeping again. But I loved my girls and it was heartbreaking to see them go. Our original 2 Omlet girls were Sage and Onion (hubby's idea of a joke ). Then, after Sage died we wanted a name that would go with Onion, and that's where the cheeses idea came in. So we had Philadelphia (cream cheese for a cream legbar ), Brie, Gorgonzola (who became known as Zola), Red Leicester (Red) , Edam, Camembert (Cam), Stilton (Tilly), Mozzarella (Ella) oh, and Lottie who wasn't a cheese because we adopted her from a local forum member who found herself unable to keep chickens anymore . Still got plenty more cheesy chicken names up my sleeve for the new flock though It could have been worse though....hubby had wanted to name them after crisps so we'd have ended up with the likes of Onion and her friends, Cheese, Salt, Vinegar, Prawn, Cocktail and so on.....suddenly my cheesy chickens sound really well named I think
