Baby food question....

Recommended Posts

Hello all experienced mothers and fathers out there :D

Can any of you tell me whether any of the millions of books available on baby feeding/purees/weaning are actually worth the money??

I am currently of the opinion that I can use my common sense and give Bogwoppit what I think is best i.e. a varied selection of food to provide a balanced diet. :?:? I have a list of what he shouldn't eat or what should be avoided until he reaches a certain age.

Has anyone any advice?

Thanks! :D

How about borrowing a book from the library?

With my first son I sppent hours pureeing & mashing specially prepared stuff for him, with no 2 I did a bit of that, but mostly fed him food from my plate which i chewed & fed him from my finger. He was 6 months when I started to wean him, so he could eat mosat things by then.

Don't stress about it, use your common sense, it's the best thing :D

I agree with Jules.

It is a fair while since I had a baby to wean, but with my first (daughter) I spent hours lovingly pureeing carrots etc and freezing stuff in ice cube trays.

With my boys........they just got what we were eating pureed, then later just blended a bit.

I did freeze stuff that was suitable so that if we were having something spicy there was an option for them.

Don't waste your money on jars and cans.....unless there is a crisis and you need something in a hurry.

3 tsp of home prepared food is worth more than a whole jar of commercially prepared baby food, nutritionally speaking IMHO. :D

You'll have fun being creative.

Same as Egluntine.........and then I did the same for Lauren and Jake on the days I looked after them. Just don't add salt to your cooking until you have taken out the babay portions as their kidneys can't process the salt.

I did have a very good book - but I've passed it on to Emma (theherd123) so she'll have to tell you what it is called.........

Yup puree then freeze. With my first I did this for slightly longer but with the later ones I only did it for the first few days so they got the idea of eating then I just gave them food to eat. I've since learned it is known as baby led weaning and one of the 'in' ideas at the moment but I don't really have a clue about that kind of thing. I just do whats easiest and seems most natural to me.

Annabel Karmel always makes me laugh.

Her recipes are things like

Take one banana. Mush with spoon. Feed to baby.

To be honest I feel that people like her are just playing on peoples paranoia on getting it right for their precious darlings.

Thanks all :D

I have pureed and frozen some carrot cubes and some butternut squash cubes. I did this last week because I had loads of both and didn't want them to go to waste!

I think I will just continue as I have been doing. The reason I asked was I've had a flick through a few books and thought that they were either telling me things that were really obvious (like mashing the banana with a fork) or suggesting cordon bleu style food that would cost me an arm and a leg to buy  It doesn't help that at baby clubs other mothers start quoting what such and such author says you should do as if by doing anything different you will be maltreating your baby.

I don't tend to add salt to cooking so that shouldn't be a problem. We eat plenty of veg and fruit so he will get lots of variety, perhaps just need to increase the amount of fish we eat.

It's a whole new world this baby malarkey! [i need to trust my sensible head more often  ]

Go for it Lorna! I agree with all the above!

I had a free copy of an Annabel Karmel book, but most of the ingredients were things that we wouldn't normally eat, so it did create extra work at a time when you don't need it! I did start using more squash and sweet potato in my cooking as a result, but still don't use red lentils (which is a good job as they wouldn't eat them anyway) Pointless encouraging them to eat things that you won't normally be feeding them for the next 16 years. Number 3 got exactly what we ate - and he is the one who eats absolutely anything and everything. 8)

Would you like a copy of the Annabel Karmel book? It's a very old one - I was given two and as mine are now 3 5 and 7 I don't need it. To be honest it is mostly common sense, although with my first I was sadly lacking in that department so it was really helpful! If you want it pm me your address, I'm going to the post office tomorrow so could wing it your way

Hi just a tip i learnt between 1st and 2nd, with my 1st we did the homecooked pureeing freezing in the ice cube trays (from lakeland) they had flat slide on tops so could do big batch and stack on top of each other. However as they needed heating and we didn't add the emergancy jar until a bit later he would not eat it cold! no good when you are in the middle of nowhere with no micro! With my little girl we mixed frozen home made goodies with cold jars so that she would eat it hope this helps cam

I wish I'd taken a photo Egluntine :lol::lol:

Thanks for the tip cam1. I need to get cube trays with a lid.

Lesley, I think banana-on-the-go will happen quite frequently! I always forget that I like avocado so don't tend to buy it but perhaps I will..

I'm getting quite excited about all of this now :D

Mine all ate loads of bananas, but be warned they do stain clothes so make sure you have some good large bibs.

We pretty much just pureed what we were eating as a family, we don't use much salt in food. My DS was weaned on pureed Sunday roast and veg, we would do a big batch on a Sunday then freeze in icecube trays and vary which one he had each day.
