Guest
is anyone watching this on BBC1 at the mo? Have just seen her watching the Northern Lights, what an incredible sight! I would love to see them in person, has anyone on here seen them first hand and what was the experience like? I think I'd be crying like she was was! Guest
i've always wanted to visit norway, ever since i fell in love with morten harket in the 80s I even started to learn norwegian I can say "come and sit at the table" and "excuse me, where is the railway station?" spelling will be totally off but they go roughly; a) comm o set ta haver borden b) unsklyd meg, hvorden comme jeg til jeinbarnestaschjonen? or summit like that, I'll have to learn how to say, "point me in the direction of the aurora!" redhotchick
I've wanted to see the Northern Lights for ages. I keep mentioning it to my OH. I was on the internet looking for trips while the programme was on! I fancy going on the Hurtigruten up the coast. I went to Oslo on a short break in 2006 and had a fabulous time, Norway is a beautiful country.
Snowy
Norway is beautiful! My best friend moved out there a few years ago and I spent a fortnight with her (she married a farmer, they have a real farm ). I learnt some Norwegian - syltetoy (means strawberry jam )

Cinnamon
It was a lovely show, wasn't it? We looked into a Northern Lights winter cruise a few years ago,but decided to go somewhere hot instead. I think its on our ever increasing list of things to see when the children have left home
Cate in NZ
Oh, wow, that programme sounds amazing, I'm quite , that I can't watch it too . Maybe one day, eventually, it might shown down here (they do show a lot of British TV programmes, so it is possible). Hubby & MIL took a Norwegian cruise in early December last year, and on their last night they saw the Northern Lights, they said it was a really magical, strangely moving experience . Sadly I missed out, stuck at home with S&I whilst MIL & hubby did the mother and son bonding thing just a couple of months before he moved out here. So it was a very special trip for them to undertake.
Guest
you can watch it here http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00dhv1n/
Cate in NZ
you can watch it here http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00dhv1n/ Thanks for the link, but I can't . iplayer doesn't work unless you've got a uk isp, and proxy servers don't seem to work. I missed loads of the olympics and some other great TV because of it, but much more technical minds than mine have tried to find ways round it (expat friends I mean, with greater techy skills and the same desire to watch UK tv)....and so far I've not heard of a way round it . Cinnamon
I thought Joanna came over really well in the show. Not afraid to be seen not all glammed up, but looking like a normal middle aged woman. She has the most wonderful melodious soothing voice too Good on her
MedusA
I taped it as OH wanted to watch the Soccer Aid thing. I plan to savour it at my leisure. Seeing the Aurora in person is one of my "10 thingstodobeforeIdie".
The Dogmother
The lights didn't put in an appearance while we were in Lapland , but we saw lots of really clear shooting stars.
Old Speckled Hen
Five years ago my daughter and I went on a husky safari into Northern Sweden. We were out for five nights with our own team to look after (hard work) and on New Year's Eve after a well earned sauna and a huge dinner we stood outside our camp watching an aurora show with a glass of champagne. It lasted for an hour, included some rare red light, and was truly wonderful. It was minus 40 and our feet were sticking to the ground so we had to keep stamping about. I tried to set the camera up but the electronics wouldn't work in the cold. Auroras go in 11 year cycles (I think) following sunspot activity so I think we are in a bit of a lull at present but I have seen them once here in Cumbria. I have been lucky enough to see a total solar eclipse as well and I think the northern lights eclipsed that!!
Mumpty
Brilliant viewing, my 14 year old said he wants to die seeing them (a bit drastic I know, but I get the impression he was seriously impressed!) My 17 year old daughter loved Joanna Lumley, as did I, she's wonderful isn't she? Will be on the internet sorting out a visit to capture our own sightings. How about the artist with the crazy knitted outfit, what was that all about? expressing his artistic flair I s'pose.
dancing cloud
Wasn't it a lovely programme? I've been to Norway twice, but ony at "midnight sun" time (well worth seeing too!) I've never seen the northern lights and would love to - perhaps we should run an Omleteers outing ? I would probably cry buckets but, from the sound of it, the rest of you would be too busy snuffling to notice. Apparently the lights have been seen as far south as London, so maybe if we ask very nicely, they could come to see us instead?
The Dogmother
It is truly worth the trip if you get a chance. I'd really like to go back sometime
Cinnamon
Apparently the lights have been seen as far south as London, so maybe if we ask very nicely, they could come to see us instead? Yep, we saw them here about 3 years ago. It was really strange. Hubby said, look at the sky & it was all green & ribbony. It lasted about 20minutes & was amazing to see, although not as spectacular as the show on TV last night. We looked it up on the web & it said it was a rare sighting of the Northern Lights. ali-s
I didn't see the programme but I have seen the Northern lights 3 times up here They are very impressive Like Cinnamon said the lights were like green ribbons across the night sky. They took my breath away. We are probably closer to Norway than we are to the Southern part of the UK.
Redwing
We (myself and hubby) go to Finland a lot but have only been lucky enough to see the Northern Lights once which was in Feb this year, it is honestly a very humbling experience and makes you realise how small and insignificant we are in the great scheme of things! the display lasted about an hour and we were freezing but it was worth every second as it is absolutely fantastic. We saw the programme last night and our only criticism was that they put music to the light display and in real life one of the most remarkable things is that it is completely silent and the silence adds to the magic of the whole experience. I took some photos of the display and they are amongst my most treasured posessions.
Seagazer
We went to Finnish Lapland a couple of years ago (no snow!) and we didn't see the Northern Lights until we were flying home. The pilot said on the right hand side of the plane you can see the northern lights and everyone rushed over - I'm a scaredy pants on planes and stayed strapped into my seat. I would love to do a nordic cruise. Hubby and I just got back from Copenhagen and there were lots of cruise ships in the harbour ready to go off. Ive never seen the northern lights but been to norway a few times and seen the midnight sun. chelsea
Cor Poet, you read my mind, I logged on specifically to post about this programme! I found it very moving, I was in tears and I thought Joanna Lumley was brilliant - she was so engrossing to watch and actually interested in the locals and their stories. She has inspired me to want to go there and see them for myself. loved it, I wish it was repeated on tv again though so hubby could watch.
