Valkyrie
Thought you might like to see my monsters 2 and a half months on. Look innocent don't they? Don't be fooled - something else is more interesting. Can we make it over? Well this time they bottled out, but yesterday I looked out and Cheyenne (buff) was up the garden path. The other two were going potty and then she panicked. I got her back in and she promptly hid behind the cube with the other two clucking at her. I don't know if they were telling her off too or whether they were asking for tips. Today although she had two jolly good looks she didn't bother and went for a dust bath instead (before the storm). Sioux's leg is better - dunno what that was about. I had intended last weekend to put the cube and run in its winter quarters - forgot that the extension was added so this morning OH and I were digging up more plants so I can have more room! Valkyrie
Hopefully we are nearing the end of the moult - I have almost run out of Poultry Spice - so Sioux and Apache are still a bit raggy. Cheyenne lost loads and now has shiny gold head and neck feathers and as she was the first to lose her wing feathers they are now good enough to fly over the fence whereas the other two still have some missing and short, so they don't try. I warned Cheyenne that any more Cooler King escapades and she will have her wings clipped. They were all queueing along the top of the bench the other day until Sioux spotted something tasty and half flew half dropped like a stone to chase it closely followed by Cheyenne - Apache did her aloof bit and followed much later. Cheyenne is very much the explorer and wanders away from the others (more like "I'm bored with these two old fogeys") until she gets frightened by a squirrel and runs to the others for safety. Apache has one beetle green black feather on her back and seems to be growing darker patches. I just love their fluffy bums! They were creating such a noise earlier on - all because a pigeon was under their favourite tree! They are let out to roam the whole garden at 3, but couldn't bear the other bird in their spot, so were hankering for early release! I will try and snap them under the tree for you. Valkyrie
Thanks for the nice comments - ahem, bokbokbok! Yes hopefully they will be too heavy to fly much - and Apache has a few more beetle feathers - so they must be the adult ones now. I think Cheyenne is due for one more moult (arghhhhhhh more ginger grass). Well here are the pics of their favourite tree. We have noticed that there is a lot of whingeing going on - particularly on sunny days - because they want out under the tree. It's not as if they haven't got any shade in the fenced off area! The tree - with Cheyenne just visible - sorry I had to do this one a bit bigger so you can see. Just visible in the bottom right corner is an upside down hanging basket strategically placed so that they don't eat all the strawberry plant! They think they are invisible under there. This is where they preen themselves and roost on the dry stone walling. And Cheyenne escaped again today and OH had to herd her back in because everyone else was out - I wish I had seen that, he has only just recently got brave enough to stroke them! I rather think the hen was really in charge there!

Valkyrie
Phew, the brain works sometimes after all! It was a posting about halfway down the chicken forum: "Anyone use local farms in Surrey or Hampshire?" posted by Mojojojo - near my neck of the woods - and having about the same success as me by the sounds, so I said a lot of things are from the internet and suggested you. I can't remember when, it was a way back a bit, but I made lots of notes and lots of purchases thanks (I think - the purse strings and OH might not agree!) to you!! Ain't Nobody Here
I probably didn't look at it as I don't use farms in Surrey or Hampshire . I'll have a look for it now!

Groovychook
Oh, what beautiful girlies!! My chicken wish list has just taken another twist!!
Valkyrie
Robbo - would love to see your Orpland/Polington! Groovychook - it is so hard to choose birds - I had such a long list. I also liked the Kraienkoppes, but outvoted because OH thought they looked more like eagles. Basically I wanted ones not likely to fly much. The Brahmas, Wyandottes, Barnvelders, Croad Langshans, Cream Legbars, Marans, Sussex etc - sooo many lovely ones. Then there are Lavender Orpies, Gold Laced Orpies - the list is endless!
