Redwing
Since I got married in 1999 my wedding dress has been in a box. I don't want to get rid of it but also don't want it to live in a box forever so would like to make something out of it that I will look at for years to come and smile (or burn depending on how the marriage turns out! ) The dress is in two parts, the top half is cream and gold and is textured and the skirt is gold and satiny (is that a word?) I am not very imaginative so my first thought was cushions which is an option but I thought if I asked you creative types someone may have another thought. Any ideas please? theherd123
My mum used her wedding dress to make mine and my brothers Christening robes. If children are part of your future plans this could be a possibility.
Snowy
Hm, I'd be tempted to make a patchwork throw for the bed or lounge (but then I do like patchwork)
Mrs Frugal
That's a lovely idea, Snowy .
chelsea
what about occasional table covers? You know, you can get those round bedside tables, you could use the satin layer as the bottom piece and the gold bit as the shorter "topper" to go on top of the satin. (if you get what I mean!? ) Any odd offcuts you could make into little hanging pomanders for your wardrobe? Dressing table runners?
AJuff
A beautiful set of cushions for your bed?
Redwing
My mum used her wedding dress to make mine and my brothers Christening robes. Thats so lovely, what a beautiful idea. Thanks everyone for your suggestions, I like the idea of patchwork as I will get more out of the fabric I have if I do that
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Any chance you could split the two parts and maybe dye them to make something you can continue to wear to fancy dos as a reminder of your wedding? And then use the rest for patchwork? Patchwork is so my thing for early winter 2009. Jane on the Yarnstorm blog is posting some lovely items to fire one up for quilting patchwork this autumn. bokbokbok
Have you started cutting it up yet? Can you still get in to it? I woud be sitting here shouting TRASH THE DRESS TRASH THE DRESS which doesn't mean I want you to destroy it! There is a new trend in photography where after the wedding the bride goes with a photographer and has a different set of photos taken - ones where you aren't worried about the dress getting a little dirty round the hem - bare feet in tall grass / bare feet in water / sitting against a wall . . . etc etc etc If you were in my area I would invite you to a TTD session before you start cutting it up. The Dogmother
My mother made a beautiful cot set for us with her wedding dress - a sort of quilt/eiderdown cover and various other things too. She still has them somewhere.

I love the idea of Trash The Dress! I always wanted one of those sat on a horse in my wedding dress - although I think my horse would've chucked me off if I'd tried that on him

redhotchick
I love the Trash The Dress idea. I think it was in a sunday magazine recently. A patchwork bedspread is a lovely idea. My first thought was a collage that you could frame, it would be protected behind glass and would keep forever. You could make an abstract collage and use bits left over after making a bedspread, or a christening gown. Ooo how exciting. Can you do everything! Let us know please!
