Joojoo
I use paper shreddings from my shredder. They work really well. I think you can sometimes find mites in hay and straw which is why most people don't use them. You could also put hemcore in the nest box or just leave it empty. Sandychick
I use wood shavings which work well. I will probably just use the Auboise though when that runs out.
Ain't Nobody Here
Just shredded paper here - free and good for compost too!

Snowy
If it's going to be a choice between hay and straw, use straw but definitely not hay. They will eat hay and it causes impacted crops. Straw is fine, as long as you do change it regularly. But as others have said - shredded paper is fine (and free!) or just shavings

Egluntyne
Definitely not hay......it may cause impacted crop. TBH I feel the same about straw too. I use Aubiose, a hemp based bedding.
Eggstatic!
I use shredded paper, it is easy to pick out the poo as one of mine always sleeps in the nest even with a ball in it
sandyhas3chucks
My straw came in a sealed bag! WITH BEASTIES!!! easy bed & shredded paper for me! Doesn't hay give them respiratory problems too?
peanut12
Shredded paper all the way for nest boxes, with Medibed in the run.
Lesley
Aubiose here as well - and as the others have said, never hay.
Angels4
I've been using straw (very economical) large bale for $10. I have heard the larger bits could lead to an impacted crop if ingested so I've been using garden shears to cut it down. I've been doing research to find an item similar to hemcore (not available in the States) and the closest I've found in a kitty litter called "felinepine". sparkysmum
Hi shredded paper here too. Cut short though otherwise it tangles round their legs and they drag it everywhere
kirbyhouse
Yup - shredded paper. There is something soothing about them pooping on my credit card statement! Never had any probs. Sal
jomaxsmith
I use Easibed. I tried shredded newspaper but found it got stuck to the eggs and left print on them!! Jo
