new chick
Is it ok to give chickens Tomatoes? Today I gave my three girls a Cherry tomato between them, they ran over pecked and pass it between themselves. They had 5 minutes of "Tomato Football" before it was all gone. Great to see, so so funny NC
half dozen
Our girls LOVE tomatos they eat all my husbands that have fallen off the plants in green house.
Hen Watch
Mine hated tomatoes when they were younger. But like children their tastes change, and now they love them. I put the containers with the old tom plants in their run and they enjoyed flapping up to peck off the old going over baby toms.
jomaxsmith
I love watching them when one has a treat and can't stop running long enough to eat it because the others will get it! Very funny! Mine love tomatoes, especially the seeds - they stand for ages pecking the individual seeds off the patio. Mind you, the seeds must pass through undigested as I've had lots of tomato seedlings popping up in cracks in the patio this summer! susanbb
Mine like them too although they do have a preference to cherry tomatoes
chooklady
Mine love tomatoes aswell. In fact it gets quite rough if there is a tomato involved with chickens running in all directions.
The Dogmother
My girls love tomatoes. Mine too, in fact it creates some entertainment for me. They also love windfall apples.
Alex_A
Mine won't eat tomatoes or apples (which is a shame, as I've got loads of both). They do love sweetcorn, though, and corn on the cob rugby is fun to watch!

Mine were very sceptical about most 'treats' until they started laying and now they eat most things (except basil, I discovered recently!) Apples are a good one here as the eglu is under next door's apple tree and they're getting bombarded with windfalls - hopefully there won't be a direct hit Jo
Alex_A
My started laying last Thursday, but the hasn't started yet. I tried them on apples when they first arrived (last Tuesday) and the apples were still in the run untouched when I cleaned it out on Sunday. They were quite hard windfalls, though, so I thought I might try them on a couple of softer ones. I put the tomatoes in on Sunday, but they were free-ranging most of the day. They didn't touch them in the hour or 2 before bedtime after we put them back in the run, though. Sounds like it's worth trying them again on foods from time to time in case their tastes change. They didn't like my homegrown blackberries either!
jomaxsmith
Alex, if you stamp on the apples and break open the tomatoes they might be more willing to try it. Jo
Mrs Webmuppet
My chooks kept getting thro' the anti chicken defences to attack the tomato plants (they like their tomatoes really fresh!) as for apples, they have ensured that there's no windfall apples left under my trees! Alex_A
Thanks for the tip about squashing them up - I'll try that (and with the blackberries as well) to see if they are more interested.
Alex_A
Thanks for the tip about the apples - they love them once they are stamped on. I'll try squashing a tomato for them as well.
