Chicken Licken
Happened to me and they went on a shopping spree in Hong Kong (if only I could!!)
jlo
Happened to me too. AND my mum used her debit card at a nationwide ATM and had the card cloned and used! She didn't lose out but it is so-o-o much hassle. She realised later that the guy in front of her had been acting a bit oddly but thought nothing at the time. When she realised what had happened, she went to the police to report it and to suggest that they look at the CCTV near the ATM for the time, they said that it was a "non-crime!" rusky123
They used my card for shopping at Sainsburys, groceries delivered, even claimed a credit because some food was not up to scratch, I had a £5 credit on my card, new carpets, delivered and fitted, and wait for it a shopping spree at Tiffanys!. Knew about the carpets because CC company phoned me because I had had new carpets a week before the other side of the country.I stopped my card, had bills for 3 weeks after. . CC company did not prosecute because it was a multiple occupancy house, and could not prove anything. My thoughts " LOOK AT THE CARPETS" you know the flat!!,and those HUGE blingbling earrings! The sooner our law enforcment lot prosecute every time a crime is commited the better. I know all our cards are insured, but we all pay the insurance one way or another. only a 1/4 % here or there, but it all adds up. Why should we pay for others crimes?. My Mum is in her 80's and they cloned her CC number, I can brush it off, know I am covered but she was petrified, never owned a penny in her life and thought she had to pay off a huge debt. Not fair. Hen Watch
How awful for you. Even if you don't loose out financially it's a pain sorting it out. My hubbie was swimming last year, his locker was forced, they took his cards and in just 45 mins spent £1000 in Argos and supermarkets buying alcohol and cigarettes that are good for resale. Luckily he phoned me and I stopped the cards withing an hour and no penalty. But annoyingly all our joint cards were stopped, new cards took 10 days to arrive and I could not use the cashpoint or pay for goods in shops. Really inconvenient. Had to get cash out of savings passbook. On another note, I work in a call centre and sometimes ring customers when their cards decline. It's usually something silly like they've typed in the wrong expiry date, but my point is, in all the years I've worked there only about 5 people have said "ok but I will call you back". Someone did say "what number should I call you back on?" to which I replied "I'm not going to tell you as it will put your mind at rest to ring the telephone number on the website"...... I wish more people would question who I am, but most don't. Obviously I don't like the thought that I may sound bogus but I really am not offended in anyway by being questioned when I call and I wish more people would do it. Egluntyne
Happened to my daughter....whilst she was having her appendix removed as an emergency. She likes to shop till she drops but even she couldn't go that far.
Redwing
How awful for you. its a horrible thing to happen and the hassle of sorting it all out is a real pain. Our home in England was burgled while we were in Lapland earlier this year. The credit card company were keeping an eye out for dodgy transactions on our cards once we reported the loss to them (the cat sitter found the mess and called us to tell us ) The credit card company phoned a few days later to say that they had spotted a dodgy transaction and that we had 'apparently' spent £250 on jewellery in Norway... Soooooooo tempted to feign surprise and say it wasn't us!
The Brown Clan
Mine was cloned and used to donate to charity apparantly its very common to see if the card active , and used to obtain a credit reference , also to buy a moblie phone and lots of credit for it , and lastly to order goods from a catalogue !!!! Thank goodness i got the money back!!! although it took my bank 12 weeks in which to issue me with a new card ( and several irate calls from me ) whilst waiting they had a fault in their system apparently and was told I could get money out in the bank as long as I brought ID , which I did but it was not much fun queueing up with 3 children !!!! Seagazer
I was just going to start a thread on this as its just happened to us. Horrible you know whats have taken £400. My hubby just phoned up and asked if I was in Wisbech Not that unusual for me as I have family there but no I was at home in grey Sidcup. This is so annoying, now he won't have his card for our holiday next week and the nice Barclay's man thought he might have stopped mine as well so I have to go out and see if I can use it . Hubby can't think where this might have happened although there was a £6 on line payment so perhaps its that.Grrr
Mrs Frugal
That happened to me too. Someone managed to gamble £1000 of my money at William Hill online . We spotted it on our bank statement and alerted the bank who were amazing and my money was refunded within a couple of weeks. Good luck. I hope you are reunited with your money soon too. clootie
What gets to me is the barrage of fake emails from so called "banks/building societies" asking me to check my online account as there has been fraudulent activity. Of course I don't have an account with every bank in existence but I'm bound to have an account in one of them. Thankfully I know that the actual bank wouldn't ask for details like that via email but other people could fall for it because as soon as the words fraudulent activity are used, it makes you want to immediately check it out. Creepy really because they do look pretty convincing. Grrrrrrrr
Seagazer
I get a lot of those phishing emails but they go straight to my junk mail thank goodness. I have to say that I think Barclays Fraud Dept are brilliant as it was them that alerted us to it, we probably wouldn't have known for a while. They phoned me last year to ask about a couple of 'funny' amounts going through on my account but fortunately that was just my son using my card!!! I-tunes had a lot to answer for in that instance. rusky123
Love my CC company, except when they phoned to say 'How much did you spend ?', DH answered the phone, trust him to be home that day!,I had just bought a special present for our 36th wedding anni. Glad these cc companies phone, our cards were 'compromised' last month, yet again, we knew nothing about it, only £30, but our cards were changed, had new ones within 2 days. Well done 124 card. I really feel sorry for people like my Mum who worry themselves sensless thinking they owe so much money because of fraud. First time I was 'cloned' phoned police, they came to see us at home, they did not know what to do, it was their first CC cloning case!. Only 4 years ago. I would never dream of taking anyone elses money or belongings, just hope these people who use fraud as a way of life are punished/deported or both. Sound a bit racist there, I am not, just realistic.
Ain't Nobody Here
Happened to me too . Couple of years ago, online betting starting with tiny amounts then increasing to a few hundred . I'm with Goldfish (now Barclaycard - from today!) and they were great - they spot "unusual activity" and phone you right away. I get loads of those bank/building society emails too . I agree some are convincing but some are so poor - bad English, dodgy pictures/logos - I can't believe anyone's fooled by them. On another note I once cancelled my card because I couldn't recognise a transaction on my statement. It was only about £8 but I just couldn't work out what it was and Goldfish advised me to cancel. It was only much later I eventually worked out it was my compost bin (which I had bought online and was delivered locally but showed a location in the depths of England) . All that hassle for nothing .
Old Speckled Hen
My debit card was used to buy hotel accommodation for £450 in Italy which put me into the red so Barclays kindly gave me an automatic overdraft (they were always angling to give me OD facilities which I didn't want) which was emptied straightaway. The first I knew about it was when my card was declined while shopping. I was near my bank so was able to sort it out on the spot. However, to their credit they have spotted unusual activity since, all innocent, and phoned me straightaway. I find it quite disturbing to get spam mentioning somebody's name, for example, in the header after you have perhaps emailed somebody new or shopped on a new site. It shows that your mail is being intercepted though not entirely thanks to modern encryption. I have an Apple which is fairly safe but it's still disquieting. I was told that the best thing to do is set up a separate email address just for shopping

Ain't Nobody Here
I use an old Yahoo email account for online shopping websites I don't particularly want to hear from again. It's also good for registering for things where they need an email address but you don't want to be bombarded.
