daj198
We got three in the end! We only intended to get two but they all looked so ill and unhappy. This is Nel: This is Helga: (Maude behind) Left to Right: Helga, Nel, Maude Left to Right: Nel, Helga. Maude Poor things, it's such a shock getting more ex-batts after being used to healthy hens for so long. It's really odd the way they just stand there, not knowing what to do. Maude started pecking the grass a bit though. Two of them have blood on their combs

abwsco
Oh poor loves although they look well feathered. I always think ex batts have such sad eyes at first. Bet they'll soon settle in and congratulations

daj198
Oh poor loves although they look well feathered. I always think ex batts have such sad eyes at first. Bet they'll soon settle in and congratulations Yes, they are quite well feathered. Our last ones were too compared to some others I have seen- I think whichever farm they come from takes relatively good care of them. I'm quite concerned about the blood though, hopefully it'll clear up soon though. Nel wouldn't go to bed! She sat outside the eglu and went to sleep in the rain. I had to prod her by putting my arm through the egg port and lift her into the eglu. I then had to encourage her completely in by lightly nudging her on the bum with the door. I can see she is going to be a trouble maker! It's so sad that she doesn't even know how to go to bed though.

SLK69
Hi, Well done for giving them a happy retirment - I had mine since MArch and I had forgotten that sad look and bedraggled appearance - mine are now as fat as christmas turkeys and VERY confident am sure all will be well with yours. Is the blood from the hens themselves - can you see any cuts ? Susie
daj198
It looks like it's from the hens themselves as they have little chunks missing off some of the spikes on the top of their combs. It's like they've been pecked at.
Janty
They will soon be feisty and fully feathered. Have fun with your new girls.
mostin
Well done for giving them a home, please keep us updated with photos of them as they perk up and become "real chickens".
daj198
Will do. I might try to get some photos of Maude from the front, she doesn't look so bad from behind but from the front it looks like she's completely bald! It's nice to look back at old photos to see how far they've come.
