chelsea
I havent eaten meat for 20 or so years, but I dont dislike the smell of a fry up. I normally do it for OH when we are away in the caravan and love the smell but it would never tempt me to eat it. One thing I refuse to handle or cook is offal....it never comes in our house! *shudder*
Tessa the Duchess
One thing I refuse to handle or cook is offal....it never comes in our house! *shudder* See I love kidneys and liver and I quite like heart too although it's almost impossible to buy it. My best friend is coming to stay next week and she loves liver too, I am planning on doing a liver and bacon supper which will gross the rest of the family out, but we will swoon over Tessa

You enjoy though!
clootie
I had to acquire a heart for my son to disect at school recently. Our local butcher produced an ox heart for us - I've never seen anything like it - massive. My son went off to school grinning from ear to ear that day. He sneaks it into the house and eats it when I am not around.

Dodge
Offal = The internal parts of an animal including brain, heart, kidney, liver, tongue and tripe. Offal is the entrails and internal organs of a butchered animal. The word does not refer to a particular list of organs, but includes most internal organs other than muscles or bones. Yum Yum

Rhapsody
Thought for the day If God had wanted us to be vegetarian, then why did he make meat taste so nice Thing is Dodge, there are many other considerations than flavour, such as personal morality, empathy, the health and rearing practices of the animals consumed etc, which is why on this site you will meet many selective carnivores such as myself who only eat traceable free-range meat. No-one becomes a vegetarian because they don't like good or tasty food. And excuse me but would you say to a Muslim "If Allah didnt want us to eat pork, then why did he make bacon so tasty?" Didnt think so. Back to the original topic, when I was vegetarian many moons ago I used to phone in advance if I were eating out and discuss what could be prepared for me, cos I got sick of goats cheese tart and leftover veg lasagne

Well I put my tin hat on and got well dug in, and I thought I had got away with it when suddenly..... BOOM blown out the water by Rhapsody I had hoped that my little contribution would have been taken in the light hearted way that it was intended. Rhapsody I am well aware of the reasons why people become vegetarian i.e. morality, religion, culture, ethics, aesthetics, environment, society, economy, politics, taste, or health. I often enjoy a veggie meal myself and admire people who choose that way of life. Our family also only buys meat from a free range source where ever possible. It can sometimes come over as a bit patronising when someone jumps on their soap box. However I also jump on my soapbox from time to time, so I can't talk. I apologise if I offended you in any way. helenmb
Offal is awful - Yuk! I've been a strict veggie for over 20 years - I get annoyed with people who say they are veggie and then eat fish and chicken!! My motto is "nothing with eyes except potatoes" I agree that there is very little imagination and often the ingredients are repeated in both the starters and main courses. MUSHROOMS usually - sometimes I feel like a mushroom - kept in the dark and fed on sh*t THE most annoying thing I see on menus is "Vegetarian Option on Request". The last time I "requested" they asked me what I wanted so I said "I'd like the chef to do his job and not expect me to do it for him when it comes to menu planning". I should have asked for something very complex and hard to get hold of just to see what reaction I got. Are people not capable of buying a book or looking up ideas on the TV or internet? One day I'll go into a pub and there be something better than the usual 'Take it or Leave it' choice. Thai and Indian normally do good vege options without any hassle for religious reasons. Thai is often a no no because of the fish sauce they add to everything Thankfully we have a wonderful little Indian round the corner from us which does loads of veggie stuff. I love Paneer and they do this in several ways. My DH always pinches mine when I order it as its so yummy plus the Peshwari Nan is to die for - YUM

Seagazer
I was a vegetarian for a while a few years back. I realised I didn't like the smell of meat cooking (I kept throwing mince away thinking it was off ). Mind you I still had to cook meat for the rest of the family. I used to go to a great vegetarian restaurant near St. Paul's Cathedral when I worked in London. Those were the days
Egluntyne
I wonder why it is always the bacon butty that makes a vegearian waver? I find the smell of bacon cooking quite revolting and it makes my gall bladder hurt if you see what I mean.
helenmb
If I'm desperate for a bacon butty I buy the Quorn Streaky Rashers, they taste ok if you don't over cook them and are particuarly good dipped into a lovely freshly layed and fried egg. I don't normally advocate meat substitutes but this staves off those cravings if you ever get them (I think most veggies do at sometime). helenmb
Quorn makes me very ill. I mean really, really ill. I think you are not alone Egluntine I know of others who can't eat it too. Some clever cloggs recently told me it wasn't veggie anyway as its made from mycoprotein which in essence is a fungus. As they have just reclassified fungus into living organisms like animals (rather than as a plant) they then said (tongue in cheek) it couldn't be veggie! Quorn used to be not strictly veggie because the mycoprotein was grown on (or, using) egg white from eggs which weren't free-range - the makers have since changed to using free-range eggs. Seagazer
I find the smell of bacon cooking quite revolting and it makes my gall bladder hurt if you see what I mean. I know exactly what you mean - I could only manage one cream tea last week in Devon as well as one fish and chip meal and I went too far with 2 cornish pasties - felt quite icky for the week (obviously these weren't all at the same meal ). Makes my side hurt just thinking about it.....
Groovychook
I know the feeling Chelsea... Once upon a time it was Veggie lasagne & now it seems to be mushroom stroganoff or goats cheese delight! Over the years I've got used to not getting over excited about menu's... If you do find an exciting veggie menu anywhere in Devon & Cornwall, please let me know!!!
