Who here thinks that their Hens Understand what YOU say?

Recommended Posts

Hi there, the reason i ask this , is last week i told Nancy, she wasn't allowed out of the run to free range til she'd layed an egg, for she had not laid since i got her, 2months had passed, all the other 4 were regular as clockwork, the very next day there was an egg, i had to let her out. Then she stopped laying again, just the 1 egg to get out.

Do they understand or am i just mad?

They definately undersatnd!!

I told mine I was going to start giving them treats 5 times a week instead of the usual every late afternoon, and they knocked over there pot so that the treats went everywhere!

I let them out in the morning and they went straight to their little pile of evil treats and looked at me VERY smugly for a chicken...

They now scream if I take their treat pot away...

or porridge

Oh definately!

We often have chats with ours and my daughter is certain that they understand every word!!!!

When they go to bed at night it's as if they have little end-of-day chats with each other - probably sorting us out and putting the world to rights!

I don't think our chickens understand us but I do think that they recognise noises as they know the sound of footsteps on the decking and mum's car on the drive they also recognise their names being called, so they are not as dumb as they look!!

Well when ours come into the conservatory and then go through to the kitchen, I tell them "out!" , "go on out you go" and they do it! Well most of the time!! depends on if theres any crumbs under the kitchen table!! We only have to whistle like we are whistling to a dog and they come running!:lol: It's funny to see them running across the garden as fast as their legs will carry them!

You know how they jump up and down at the run door to be let out? If I approach my run and say 'go back, not coming out yet' and wave them back with my hand - as I open the run door, they all stand in line along the threshold and let me in, they don't jump over each other to get out  so funny to see them  They all look up as if to say 'well she's not coming in for nothing, what has she got for us?' 8) And if I do let them out, they race me to the back door - if I try to beat them, they fly for it, trying to get in and nick the dogs food! He knows better than to try and get in their way! They dash in, grab a lump and dash out again to eat it in peace

My OH is just starting a new venture so things are going to be very tight financially for a while. He was chatting to the chickens as I was cleaning them out, and telling them all that the free ride was over and that they all had to start pulling their weight in this family now.

The next day Dolly layed her 1st egg  , the day after that Prissy layed the biggest egg we've ever had and a few days after Lilly our Light Sussex who had shut up shop for the winter layed another whopper for us  .

Bless them, they are doing their best to help us out, so they must understand :D .

That is a great story, good work girls, it's quantum mechanics in the making, that's one for your blog. I like the look of that black /blue hen of yours too.

Thank you, I must admit, before I got her I thought black hens were just black. But when the sun shines on her you can see every colour there is in her feathers. If you've ever read any of the Terry Pratchitt books they are what I imagine the colour octarine to look like. If you haven't read them, then I appologise, I am just talking rubbish to you  .
