Oils for baby massage

Recommended Posts

Has anyone here done baby massage? I took Squidger to a class today, and the pair of us thoroughly enjoyed it. The health visitor took the class, and sent us all away with a little bottle of oil (grape seed, I think she said), so we could practice at home. The only problem is, either I have incredibly dry hands or Squidger has incredibly dry legs, because at the class today, I ended up using near half the bottle on just his two legs. She did say that there would be more suitable oils I could use on his skin, but I had to dash before I got a chance to find out what they were.

Given that he enjoyed it so much, I really want to continue on a regular basis, so can anyone suggest a more suitable oil for incredibly dry skin?

Incidentally, for those of you who are pregnant, or who have young babies, I can absolutely recommend that you give this a try - I've just managed to settle a very grumpy, unhappy teething baby into bed in 5 minutes, which I have to put down to the massage.

Sounds great! I did have a sachet of Avent baby calming massage gel which I gave away only two days ago.....flipping 'eck I could have sent it to you! I've no idea what it was like, I use baby moisturiser on Bogwoppit as he has dry skin / eczema, it is the Boots baby expert one.

Shona i have a friend who runs baby massage classes so i will ask her now by email :D

Im sure that any base carrier oil will do but i have a feeling my friend always uses olive oil :D

You can buy a carrier oil from any place that stocks aromatherapy oils.

Im starting my classes in 3 weeks time and cant wait!

Thanks Emma.

You'll love it. Squidger was by far the oldest baby there, and lots of the younger ones were fast asleep by the end of the class! Not my big dumpling though. You're meant to massage the buttocks gently at the end of the leg massage, and poor Iain ended up a a giggling wreck on the floor at that point.:lol: I can't wait till next week now!

I was told at baby massage to use Almond oil. In fact the very stern health visitor running the class insisted that only Almond Oil would do! We had great fun at our courses but sadly my 'baby' won't stay still long enough and has become ticklish all over!

Sounds like Squidger had a lovely time!

My boys have always slept well, but my bedtime routine always included a bath followed by a massage (nothing formal, just a good rub down!). I was obviously doing something right!

Can't remember what I used though - I know I used the Avent one at some point and it was fine.

hi

i am a qualified infant massage instructor these are the best oils that i recommend

fractionated coconut ~(although can be difficult to store especially if it is organic) it surprisingly contains no nuts in its content hence the name fractionated.

easier to find - olive oil (but i do not recommend one thats infused with garlic or basil or such like) as i have had mums turning up with this  olive oil is quite thick in its consistency

safflower oil (you can buy this at any decent supermarket at about £2 for half a litre) contains vitamin d and vitamin E and is my favourite along with fractionated coconut

sunflower oil

grapeseed oil

almond oil (though best avoided if you have a family history of nut allergy)

emmolients such as E45

i could name you about a dozen more - but these are the most common. if your baby has eczema let me know and i will tell you which ones are better for you

but most important DO NOT buy off the shelf baby massage oil unless it can be shown to contain no synthetic products! it is really expensive and will do your baby no good.

i suspect this is a non organic and mineral based oil and petroleum based. mineral oil lies on the surface of the skin and is not absorbed . it prevents moisture entering and leaving and so becomes a barrier.

just re read your message - best for dry or ezcema skins

Safflower oil

fractionated coconut as it is a good emollient

apricot oil

sweet almond oil

oil of evening primrose

grape seed oil is very light hence why your using too much! best used on greasy skins

if you want a break down of what each one contains and it beneficial properties just ask

I can't believe you've had Mums turn up with an infused olive oil!:shock::lol:

Lauren and Jake had olive oil with a drop of Mandarin oil added.........yum!

yup! a garlicky baby and a chilli baby!!!!

Poor little mites, I hope the chilli didn't get anywhere sensitive

I was recommended to use coconut oil (the kind that is solid at room temperature but melts in your hand) and it was good on DS1, but DS2 had eczema and reacted to everything and anything. Only Diprobase ointment (not cream) was ok on him. He tolerates almond oil on his skin well now, but is nearly 7 and has mostly grown out of the eczema.

On our list of things to take into NICU we had nappies, cotton wool and olive oil. There were times when the room smelled slightly odd.

I had used it on my othe rbabies previously anyway as they were both so big and dry.

I moved onto jojoba oil at a later date. In fact I still use it on me.
