I'm knitting socks

Recommended Posts

Just received my sock knitting kit and I can't wait to start knitting a pair for my daughter. I have never knitted socks before but the pattern says that it is easy and addictive. The wool is self patterning and the finished article looks like a fairisle pattern even though you just knit plain and purl.

Has anyone else knitted socks and if so how did they turn out? Was it easy or hard?

Will let you know how I progress.

I love my sock knitting needles they are just like cocktail sticks, they are made by an American company called Brittany. Lovely and easy to use.

Ubereglu- not aware of a pattern that is knitted on two needles but I may be in a position to knit a pair for you sometime in the New Year ( I have a bit of a waiting list at the mo, two projects to finish and two to start).

Sadly, both of you are a fair way from me otherwise I'd say pop round and I'll show you. Maybe next time I am knitting socks I'll get Mr Webmuppet to video the important bits for yo. I had a quick look on You Tube but couldn't see anything appropriate.

You could always try asking at your local knitting shop they may be able to help you.

Thanks for all your comments and especially for the offer of help, Mrs Webmuppet. I think I may need some as this is my first effort. I am using a pattern for a simple sock that came with the kit. I'm hoping that it is simple but only time will tell.

So far so good, I have knit the ribbing and am now well into the cuff. It's quite fascinating watching the pattern emerge as I knit. When I have progressed further I will try to upload a photograph.

I knit socks on two circular needles, it's so much easier as there is no danger of the needle falling out of the stitches when your work in in your bag. I can also recommend short row heels. I think you'd need to have an idea of how short rows work but it means no picking up stitches etc and gives a finish similar to a commercially made sock.

I'd be happy to halpe anyone as well, the more sock knitters there are in teh world a happier place it will be ;)

Thank you for the offer, I may well take you up on it. I know you can get patterns where you knit socks using only two needles, but the problem I have is that I could only find a pattern with cables in, which I can't do.

What I'd really like to make is a pair of simple two needle socks, knitted using chunky yarn.

I use this method too. I use a toe-up pattern which can be adapted to knit both socks at once avoid the the problem of "YSA" (yarn shortage anxiety) and ending up with one sock having a toe in a different colour because you run out of wool before the end!!! And you can fit the sock to the foot as you go along. I now have several pairs as do all my family...we make quite a sight of an evening sitting in a row on the sofa with our feet lined up in matching socks on the footstool!

However, I always have trouble with the cast-off. It is either too tight so I have to unpick several times and redo the cast-off on successively large needles or it is so loose the socks fall down instantly. Does anyone have a foolproof method of casting off that gives a nice stretchy finish? I currently use a method where you knit two stitches together, return the resulting stitch back to the LH needle and knit that together with the next stitch and so on. It is stretchier than the method where you knit two stitches and then pass the first over the second etc.
