Daphne
I also think you might want to mention this to the breeder. I don't know if Buffy's problems are genetic or not and I suppose the only way to find out would be in the sad circumstances of a PM. Depending on how Buffy progresses I would be tempted to tell the breeder about what has occured so far and what the vet said. If the worst happens I would definitely tell her. If you knew for certain there is a genetic issue then the breeder absolutely needs to know and she shouldn't continue to breed/sell from that stock. In the meantime, I continue to hope Buffy is OK; she's getting the best tlc.
laurmurf
My loving thanks to you all for your support and concern through this. Sadly Buffy died this morning, she must have slipped away in her sleep and it doesn't seem she was suffering. Yesterday she gave up again and we were syringing drops of water into her to keep her comfortable more than in expectation of recovery. My son was off school yesterday and he spent the day regularly trying to interest her in food and water. My own research suggests a liver tumour (lymphoid leucosis) - it matches all the symptoms she had. It also indicates that this disease was passed by her mother in the egg and - you're right, Daphne - this hen should never be used to breed because she'll pass it on through her eggs as carrier hens or sufferers. I did discuss a PM with the vet - i don't know how much this will cost, but am going to look into it seriously as i don't want to assume that my research is right and miss the fact that it was possibly something infectious. I intend to write to the breeder straight away, and will speak to my vet too. I would like to thank you all again - so very much - it's been a great source of comfort, information, and comradery. Daphne
Yes I'm sorry too, just got back to read this, its always sad when things end this way. But you certainly did all you could and your girl is out of any suffering now. I have a feeling a PM is around £25-£30. RIP Buffy.
